Shastia Azulay
52:42
Any low-budget tips for making the internal structure of the bust? I’ve only been able to do flat front face over a mound of tinfoil and can’t do nexk/shoulders/upright sculptures
Reid Raukar
53:20
I will ask that question near the end

Yan Rodriguez
01:09:54
When it comes to sculpting, personally, what’s the most difficult part for you ro sculpt?/ Also, people normally what’s someone likes the most of what they do… but I decided to go the other way around: What you do not like of sculpting and how do you work with it?
Reid Raukar
01:10:01
He said a 6 inch pipe is connected to the board. Looks like height of sculpture will be 7-8 inches
Reid Raukar
01:10:29
Just trying to time the questions everyone
Reid Raukar
01:12:40

Shastia Azulay
01:40:21
Do you ever get “writer’s block” for sculpting (I’m not sure if there’s another term for it)?
Aniya Saleem-gordon
01:41:06
how do you deal with carpultunle like do you just step back and do you do hand workouts so it doesn't get bad???
Jennifer Blanchard

Reid Raukar
01:52:46
Patience. He is doing so much with each stroke of the rake. It really is incredible.
Angelica Paz
01:53:22
Can you remind me again how your formed the eyes? Did you carve it out? Is that what is always recommended with sculpting?
Reid Raukar

Angelica Paz
01:55:01
yes thank you
Iuliia Rybchynska
01:55:10
YES! It helped a lot!
Maryam
01:55:33
have you ever used paper mashe to make sculpture?do you have any tips to work with paper mashe?
Yan Rodriguez
01:55:40
Even in digital sculpting I had issues with sculpting eyes… and the lips… specially the lips
Reid Raukar
01:56:07
We have an incredible paper sculpture class taught at Academy of Art if you are interested.
Maryam
01:57:28
great but still I'm wondering to know about thomas
Reid Raukar
01:57:48
I’ll ask
Maryam
01:57:56
thank you!
Aniya Saleem-gordon
01:58:28
I dont really have real clay so I got some dollar store clay and paint brushes as my tools lol
Reid Raukar
01:58:33
Pretty awesome Tom!
Reid Raukar
02:01:43
Wow. Love it!
Reid Raukar
02:02:00
You could make another. They couldn’t…
Toni Crook
02:02:36
what kind of jobs are available to sculptors fresh out of college?
Reid Raukar
02:05:39
Comic Con, Moster Con, stuff like that
Reid Raukar
02:05:58
Specialty events - collector item type of sculptures
Reid Raukar
02:06:17
Brush is a digital software
Reid Raukar
02:06:23
ZBrush
Iuliia Rybchynska
02:06:31
z-brush? what is that?
Shastia Azulay
02:06:47
Do you have an online class for zbrush?
Yan Rodriguez
02:07:19
ZBrush = Digital Sculpting
Reid Raukar
02:07:30
Shastia - Yes. GAM 241 - It teaches Brush and is incredible.
Kelly Clarke
02:08:09
Would Madame Tussauds be a good place to get experience?
Shastia Azulay
02:08:10
Is zbrush expensive? Would it be worth buying and trying out for beginners exploring sculpting
Reid Raukar
02:08:13
Google ZBrush - It is scalloping on a tablet/CPU. Pretty incredible things.
Toni Crook
02:08:15
what is a good material to create pieces for sale (that would not be as expensive as bronze)
Reid Raukar
02:08:18
The student version is $400
Reid Raukar
02:08:42
Sculpting, not scalloping…
Kelly Clarke
02:12:48
This is really good advice
John Beeson
02:13:25
I agree!
Reid Raukar
02:13:40
One foot in, one foot out doesn’t work out in any career. It takes 100% and then some to be great at anything.
Kelly Clarke
02:14:40
you can say that again!
Kathleen
02:15:19
Ha! Thanks, Reid. We are good :)
Kelly Clarke
02:15:59
Does Tom have private students?
Reid Raukar
02:17:13
Noah - I would imagine the artist would need to get the training and mentorship somewhere. The degree gave access to multiple instructors/mentors along the way. He did and undergraduate degree and then an MFA.
Reid Raukar
02:17:18
I will ask Tom to speak to it more
Reid Raukar
02:18:23
Kelly - I will ask, but he gives 100% to the students in his program. He gives them the attention as if they were getting 1 on 1 private attention.
Kelly Clarke
02:18:52
Great to know
Reid Raukar
02:19:13
He teaches a full course load every chance he gets.
Kelly Clarke
02:19:34
fabulous!
Atila Salviano
02:19:52
I can confirm, I already took 2 classes with him, his classes are amazing and feels like 1 on 1

02:20:08
Atila - Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Atila Salviano
02:22:01
@thomasjohndurham
Reid Raukar
02:22:43
He mentioned Michelangelo, Rodin, and a few others. I can ask about modern
Kelly Clarke
02:23:19
Has he ever worked for the police reconstructing faces?
Reid Raukar
02:24:18
Kelly - That never came up when we were discussing his previous experience. I am sure the skill set would translate perfectly for any with his skills.
Azam Hakim
02:26:01
he mentioned modern ones like giacometti
Reid Raukar
02:26:23
He did!
Toni Crook
02:26:29
does AAU ever offer a class on portrait sculpting specifically in stone rather than clay
Reid Raukar
02:26:38
Toni - Let me ask
Iuliia Rybchynska
02:26:54
I wish I could do Art my whole life! But I am a single mother of three… had to go for double majors having Graphic Design as a back up career while building an authority as an artist…
Kathleen

Iuliia Rybchynska
02:32:24
Tom’s IG page is stunning! Thank you for sharing
Iuliia Rybchynska
02:33:10
Do you do online sculpting classes?
Reid Raukar
02:34:21
Yes - Tom has classes he teaches online. He will be teaching classes through Zoom this Fall due to COVID.
Reid Raukar
02:35:13

Reid Raukar
02:37:16
Toni - No. We offer traditional online (20 years experience) and our onsite classes are taught through Zoom.
Toni Crook
02:37:37
ahh I see - ok thank you
Reid Raukar
02:38:04
Toni - You can work with your advisor to take some Zoom classes. We had great success in the Spring. Feedback has been amazing. I think Zoom interactions will stick around once we have COVID under control.
Kelly Clarke
02:38:13

Toni Crook
02:38:44

Reid Raukar
02:38:51
Sandra - Correct!
Toni Crook
02:38:55
thank you!
Reid Raukar
02:39:55

Aniya Saleem-gordon
02:45:09
do you know of any really cheap clay???
Reid Raukar
02:45:21
Kelly - Take a look at Tom’s home studio! Not much. A very comfy chair. That is what he got!
Dylan Wakeland
02:45:23

Kathleen
02:47:14
We have a Q from Diana watching on YT stream: "how to reconcile art and industry? Can we say an artist is free when he is under the demands of an industry?”
Eliza Pavel
02:48:01
Thank you so much, I woke up at 4 AM for this and it was worth it. Tried my hand at Zbrush even though I'm a beginner in anatomy, however learned some important information.
Reid Raukar
02:48:09
Any - I will ask in a sec
Reid Raukar
02:48:35

Toni Crook

Reid Raukar

Aniya Saleem-gordon
02:55:05

Odele Zhang
02:55:56
