Does it help to have drawing skills when doing graphic design?
Jeremy
01:14:26
@john - Being able to draw is a great skill to have. But not required.
Jeremy
01:15:32
@john - There are designers who base their projects on their drawing ability. There are designers who can barely draw a straight line.

Mirhadi Seyidli
01:19:11
How possible it is to get into design world, to become a graphic or UI/UX designer without a school background? I found couple online courses on Coursera from UC Davis and California Institute of Arts and a course on Udemy about UI/UX design by Aaron Lawrence (AAU Professor, one of your colleagues). Also alongside I’m learning softwares like Figma, Invision, photoshop and etc. I’m planning to make a portfolio (I know web development) with 2 small and 2 big projects (I was given examples by some UI/UX designers). Do you think doing all this would be able to get me into the design world without having a degree in the field?
Jeremy
01:21:21
@mirhadi - You can get into the design world without a degree. The problem will be that you will most likely be limited creatively because of your lack of knowledge of the design process and how to think and work like a designer. You may be stuck in a job you do not enjoy.

@mabel - Are you asking about a portfolio to apply to school with?
Phil Hamlett
01:23:14

Mabel Szeto
01:23:33
@jeremy yes
HVerdugo@academyart.edu
01:23:49
@Mabel- I don't think there are limitations on what you can put into your portfolio but generally over time you want to continue to grow as a designer and include your best work and you grow.
Jeremy
01:24:17
@mabel - You can put posters, magazines, drawings, anything that shows your creative abilities. Graphic design is great to include.

Unfortunately education is not an option at this point for me so I’d rather choose the alternate ways and challenge myself to constantly learn and try to be as creative as these guys and not to give up on my plan rather than giving up and not doing it at all :)

01:37:07
@Jeremy Does your level of skill affect anything? I ask because I have only just taken up drawing, and I haven't done it much.
Jeremy
01:37:35
@chibuzo - for applying to our program you do not need to have drawing skills.
Oscar Orencio Hofmann
01:38:03
@HVerdugo I am a full time photographer, but struggled getting side gigs. I am studying my MFA in Graphic Design with the AAU. The reason why I decided to study Graphic Design is because I would like to explore more options outside Indiana, specifically in Editorial Design.
HVerdugo@academyart.edu
01:39:25
@Oscar- When did you start in the MFA? Also, We will make sure to get your question answered and try to connect you with some people that can give you advice as well.
John Beeson
01:39:37
I had a similar question @Phil. Almost all of you mentioned the benefit of having access to industry professionals, or creating industry connections while at the Academy. How did those opportunities impact your professional career?
Chibuzo Ebosie-Nwachukwu
01:39:43
@Jeremy @Hector Verdugo What are some of the things that the Graphic Design program can teach, exactly? And could they be used in other fields

@chibuzo - At the beginning of the webinar Phil spoke about all of the different things Graphic Designers do. It is a very wide array of things. Many designers also have skills in photography, drawing, writing, etc. It is a very eclectic field.
Carly Jones
01:41:25
