Aniya Saleem-Gordon
54:32
natural bridges with trees and floweres
Demetrius Gant
55:09
Mine is the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. It has such a really rich history
Adelle Gresock
55:11
the high line
Rachel Maisonet
55:30
Frank Lloyd Wright has some pretty cool designs, I like fallingwater :)
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
55:40
Do you believe Landscape Architecture leans more towards craft or art and why?
Kathleen
56:15
Friendly Reminder (since i still see a mix): Attendees/Students, when typing in the chat, please click the drop down and select “all panelists and attendees”, so that other attendees/students can see your question/comment, which will help connect the replies provided by our panelist/presenters. 56:22
Moreover, could you explain how they both play a part in Landscape Architecture?
Kyjuan Washington
56:35
colorful spaces with basic shape structures
Ariana Zelaya
57:00
Golf courses are a good example in my opinion
Hector Verdugo
57:05
@Teshuah- Great questions. We will ask Jeff for you.
Heather Clendenin
57:40
Some landscape architects such as Martha Schwartz, Roberto Burle Marx actually create spaces that are artful in their concept and the craft comes into play in the actual choice materials - including plants. Great question!
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
57:57
"Not looking at the design, they just like being in the space."
Oliver Clautero
58:43
beach landscaping.
Demetrius Gant
58:44
@Teshuah Jurgan-Burton - I think the question is dependent on whether the Landscape Architect leans more towards craft and art. Craft is your set of skills. Art is your personal vision. Landscape Architecture is your set of tools to express that vision. Its important to know yourself first so that the vision you want to express is clear.
Kyjuan Washington
58:53
Everything that man creates is arts and crafts but to me art has feeling and emotional passion behind it and I can see the love and headaches in the spaces created around us.
Kyjuan Washington
59:47
so I believe architecture is using craft to bring art to life
Ian Salzman
01:00:42
How often do landscape architects work in rural towns vs. urban cities?
Eric Weber
01:01:32
I really enjoy seeing simplicity in landscaping. A little goes a long way.
Heather Clendenin
01:01:48
@Ian Landscape architects work in a wide range of communities and cities and towns across the US and around the world…either as private firms or in public agencies.
Jacqueline Bottiglieri
01:02:50
I really like the view we've got from the Palace of Chaillot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or the National Wolrd War II Memorial in Washington D.C. The way these spaces were thought out really drive the visitors to engage and enjoy with the gardens, fountains and elements around it, still paying attention to the environment/ nature
Kathleen

@Sara Great question. We offer two graduate degrees - a 36 unit MA and a 63 unit MFA and we can talk about these in detail during the question and answer period. OK?
Victor Caban
01:06:23
little patch of green among the grey
Heather Clendenin
01:06:44
@ Victor Exactly! Great observation!
Kahakuonapuaalii Barrett
01:10:08
Do landscape architects play any role in the design and construction of buildings or the refurbishment of buildings? Or purely just landscape spaces?
Victor Caban
01:11:37
that's so cool haha
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
01:12:38
Who designed the fountain again?
Heather Clendenin
01:14:19
@Kahakuonapuaalii A great question! Ideally architects and landscape architects would work on the siting of a building together and yes if the partnership is a strong one there is a dialogue between the two professionals…and the object in the landscape (the building) and the surrounding landscape ideally complement one another. This would be true for both a new building as well as the refurbishment of an existing building.
Victor Caban
01:14:32
google says it was a collab between Houston COnwill, Estella Conwill Majoza and Joseph Depace

Jacqueline Bottiglieri
01:15:22
what 3D software does Mr. McLane uses for his designs, or would he say he does more free drawings?
Rachel Maisonet
01:15:24
What kind of software do you use for landscape architecture, if at all?
Rachel Maisonet
01:15:36
just asked the same things whoops haha
Kahakuonapuaalii Barrett
01:15:58
Awesome, thank you!
Eric Weber
01:16:00
ovals are a great sophisticated shape!
Jacqueline Bottiglieri
01:16:06
great minds think alike..haha
Heather Clendenin
01:18:12
@Jacquelin @ Rachel Freehand drawing, hand drafting and digital graphics are all common everyday tools for the landscape architect: AutoCAD, SKethUp,Lumion, Rhino, GIS, etc. are all software programs that we teach and that prepare you for the professional world. we can talk more about this during the discussion following the presentation!
Lauren Spain

I'll have to leave at the end of the hour because I have class tomorrow and it's like 11 out here just a heads up I'll be requesting the recording
Heather Clendenin
01:22:36
@Aniya Thanks for joining us this evening! If you have any further questions about the School of Landscape Architecture, please feel free to contact me at hclendenin@academyart.edu Take care!

Aniya Saleem-Gordon
01:23:05
ok thank you no I've got it
Kathleen
01:23:21
Great! Thanks, Aniya!
Rachel Maisonet
01:24:06
How much math do you need to know to get a degree in this field? I'd imagine you'd need to learn geometry and trigonometry right?
Aishwarya Saraf
01:25:50
Apart from climate and the location / connection to the buildings around are there any other factors that we need to keep in mind while designing?
Heather Clendenin
01:26:16
@rachel Basic math is required to figure out slopes and ramps and calculations of cut and fill and so on…and we offer basic math courses that provide the background that allow you to succeed in a variety of studios and classes.
Jacqueline Bottiglieri
01:26:21
Would you say landscape architecture will have to adjust and blend in with buildings to accommodate the growing population, or you think further on people are going to want more green spaces rather than buildings?
Araeli J Morales
01:26:29
how often are spaces alternated for circumstance in everyday life?
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
01:27:37
Did I hear him say "atmospheric rivers?"
Demetrius Gant
01:28:05
Anyone want to connect on FB? I could make a FB group or Discord.
Heather Clendenin
01:28:54
@Jacqueline Think of landscape architecture as “everything under the sun” or all of the spaces between buildings and all of the spaces between cities…..
Heather Clendenin
01:29:28
@ Teshua Yes - I believe he did say “atmospheric rivers” !

01:32:56
Apart from climate and the location / connection to the buildings around are there any other factors that we need to keep in mind while designing?
Jerry Doan
01:32:57
@Chandra Marri you can start volunteer in Community Garden in your area at the start base
Heather Clendenin
01:33:33
@Chandra We have an internship program and…since all of your instructors are practicing landscape architects …they are your first level of networking with the professional world!
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
01:34:14
In our small towns we have a lot of abandoned properties. As a Landscape Architect, what would be your main challenges or points of concern when developing a space neighboring something unkept and unkept to varying degrees at that?
Oliver Clautero
01:34:34
while I have to leave now, was hoping to stay until the end. but Ill requesting for the recording.
Heather Clendenin
01:35:05
@Aishwarya - there are a great deal of social, environmental, cultural, historical and biological factors that need to be considered for every site.
Araeli J Morales
01:35:21
@Heather Hello Heather. I was glad to hear you in this webinar and I’m looking forward to connecting with you more. Thank you.
Oliver Clautero
01:35:30
well*
Heather Clendenin
01:36:46
@Brandon Do you mean your landscape architects license?
Jacqueline Bottiglieri
01:36:48
@Heather, I understand that point of view, it's just when I see cities like NYC, you barely see spaces in between buildings and small green paths are hard to see, just like the professor showed in his google earth view from San Francisco. So I wonder how landscape architecture would change that concrete city feeling.
Aishwarya Saraf
01:39:05
Can I assist you guys in any way in any of the project just to learn a bit more about this!!
idell
01:40:12
Thank you all. Take care, stay well
Kyjuan Washington
01:40:15
How stoic of you Gant I love your mindset
Chandra Marri
01:40:22
@Aishwarya is there any opportunity work as apprentice to learn more about Landscaping
Heather Clendenin
01:40:26
@jacqueline Whether NYC, or SF or LA….public green spaces are hard to come by. Currently, in all of these cities there are programs based on sustainable practices t hat are re-introducing green spaces and “designed ecologies” throughout the city fabric…..via green roofs, green walls, etc…..
Arlene Salomon
01:40:55
that was mazing!!
Heather Clendenin
01:41:25
@Brandon - Got it! That would be either an architects license or a structural engineering license.
Jerry Doan
01:42:31
yes!
Ariana Zelaya
01:42:39
The incorporation of plants and other greenery has become a growing idea for the past few years here in NYC
Aishwarya Saraf

I'm only 18 and my main concern here is not being able to learn what I need to be successful in the field. So to rectify most of my fears I'm here to learn techniques to do so and artistic wisdom from my seniors and try and understand more professional mindsets.
Jerry Doan
01:48:42
The AAU Landscape Architecture Department has 2 directors are very helpful and guide the students well even after you graduate, plus the instructors. I'm an alumni here so I approve this.

@Rita - You are incredibly brave, I couldn’t imagine learning English along with getting started in the program
Hector Verdugo
02:03:37
Any questions?
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
02:04:51
In our small towns we have a lot of abandoned properties. As a Landscape Architect, what would be your main challenges or points of concern when developing a space neighboring something unkept and unkept to varying degrees at that?
Hector Verdugo
02:07:10
@Teshauh- Where are you from?
Ian Salzman
02:07:34
How much overlap is there between landscape architecture and urban design/planning, and what are the central differences?
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
02:08:09
@Hector Rural Arkansas
Demetrius Gant
02:08:23
Sorry everyone I have to go in 15 minutes. Thank you for having me.
Jerry Doan
02:08:50
@Tehuah To my knowledge. those abandoned properties as a Landscape Architect can't do anything until someone buys the land and hires L.A to design. Then after that you will be able to think about those concerns. Based on the surroundings, L.A will design the space that fits in that area. If this answer your question, this is my opnion.
Kyjuan Washington
02:09:31
I have been drawing for a while now but only recently have I really understood the importance of the basics, so more recently I've been actively studying drawing basics for 2 hours a day and I see the difference in "perfection" or really pro art and my own. You guys are conveying wisdom that I really needed to hear right now to better my development so for that I say thank you. Very Much.
Heather Clendenin
02:09:59
@Demetrius Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Mary Azzarello

02:14:04
As a Landscape Architect, what is the most important skill to have? Drawing? Plant/soil knowledge? How to work within a budget?
Jerry Doan
02:15:20
When your design comes to life that makes other people appreciate the space you created.
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
02:15:23
I'm currently an Architecture student, are there options to minor in Landscape Architecture?
Hector Verdugo
02:16:17
@Teshuah- We do not offer minors but we have elective options in programs. Where are you attending school?
Chandra Marri
02:16:19
Do you need to be good at drawing to learn landscaping
Heather Clendenin
02:16:33
@Reid All of the above and, perhaps the most important, a high level of curiosity!
Araeli J Morales
02:18:31
that’s fascinating.
Hector Verdugo
02:18:36
@Chandra- Drawing is not the key ingredient to this career. It helps but it's not a make or break factor in the career path,
Jerry Doan
02:18:43
@Chandra @Reid your heart when you put into the works, practice, try to learn and curious (like Heather said), research. It also applies to other profession.
Hector Verdugo
02:18:55
Good news is drawing is a skill anyone can develop in with practice.
Teshuah Jurgan-Burton
02:19:11
@Demetrius, I found your response about craft, art, and their role in Landscape Architecture insightful. Thank you for responding.
