I was a stagehand in the before times, I was a freelance carpenter and lighting tech in events for 10 years. I know how tough a freelance hustle can be running from venue to venue day after day around New York City. How is the artist hustle in the Previs World for the Freelancer Artists, we talking 1099s for a gig a week or we talking seasonal employees with contracts on w2s?

@lauren: if you feel that you are having trouble going back, it's often a good idea to start over and make something you are more in tune with. it could even help you make better concepts
Hector Verdugo
53:03
@Yvonne- None. We start students off with 0 experience. If a student has experience we can review their work and try to help them start in the classes that make the most sense.
Sketkh Williams
53:22
Keyframes differ from Storyboards? How do Keyframes serve the project beyond Storyboards?

3D is just an asset to enhance good design.

55:50
What’s the difference between the Previs Artist’s process and the Art production pipeline, how do these work in tandem under best practices?
Carla Keefe
55:55
Well said!
YunHao Gai
55:55
Oh yeah We had this discussion in Vincenzo's workshop earlier last month. 3D is only a tool so far and knowing when to stop with 3D and move into 2D is really important!
Mateus Tofoli
56:03
How do you organize the composition of the figures in your illustration?
Sharon Wong
56:37
Hi! What is one software you recommend to master? Maya, Max 3D, ZBrush?
Aletta Wenas
56:57
@Sharon, anything you'd like to start with is fine
Dan Burchfield
56:58
The end result is a 2D presentation
Aletta Wenas
57:06
and you will eventually learn which software works best for you
Aletta Wenas
57:19
and it also depends on the project/company preferred softwares
Sharon Wong
57:32
Thank you!
Sketkh Williams
57:36
ALETTA - What’s the difference between the Previs Artist’s process and the Art production pipeline, how do these work in tandem under best practices?
Aletta Wenas
58:05
previs you're just trying to nail down the look development and what the project will be
Aletta Wenas
58:22
vs art production is when the look of the project is already figured out and we follow a style that is already established
Mohama Isa
58:25
do I really need an ipad to sketch
Dan Burchfield
58:34
link?
Andrés Díaz
58:39
is z brush not too heavy for rendering?
Carl Crocker
58:41
I love Kitbash3d
Aletta Wenas
59:00
Rendering definitely depends on the power of your PC/Mac
Justin Terry
59:05
@Sharon, I would suggest Daz3D and Blender. They're both free programs which is perfect for students lol. Blender is similar to Maya and Daz has free library of prerigged character models
Mohama Isa
59:42
can one use illustration rather than photoshop?
Sketkh Williams
59:48
Thank you for your answer @Aletta
Jesse Rush
01:00:14
Will we be going over photobashing as well?
Jesse Rush
01:00:30
and/or digital painting in general?
Aletta Wenas
01:00:52
Vincenzo will be taking his renders and going over it w paint in photoshop yes
Jesse Rush
01:01:00
k
Bryan Liang
01:01:02
where you get the pieces again?
Aletta Wenas
01:01:02
some photobashing points will be addressed, I believe
Stella Fiorello
01:01:10
Do you ever recognize assets used in other video games/movies from the kits?
Sketkh Williams
01:02:09
@Aletta will we go over the difference between Storyboards and Keyframes in tonight’s webinar? Their purposes, how to build a portfolio geared at either? Please and thank you.
juliabrumfield
01:02:28
Is learning 3D necessary to be competitive in getting concept art job or can you survive on knowing just 2D
Bryan Liang
01:02:39
Kitbash3d? is where you get the kits
Ethan Bettencourt
01:02:49
Is this for a new Jurassic park game or movie?
LaRose Colquitt
01:03:02
What is the difference between painting keyframes films and painting keyframes for video games?
Isidora Ramirez
01:03:26
Do you give the modelers both the drawn keyframe and the 3d model?
Dan Burchfield
01:03:34
The end titles show paintings. Mandelorian.
LaRose Colquitt
01:03:37
for films
Juliana Azevedo
01:03:53
Can you talk a little bit about color artists? Do they exist?
Hector Verdugo
01:03:58
@Kweku- Send me an email. Our team will work with you to help you discuss the difference and help you. Email: hverdugo@academyart.edu
Josephine Albrektsen
01:04:01
What's a good way to start Learning 3D if you've only done 2D before?
Howard Gin
01:05:18
What 3D animation program do you recommend to know first?
Sketkh Williams
01:05:18
I imagine it’s the difference between a hammer and a pencil, you know what a box looks like, it’s a matter of how detailed you get and how you brain wants to materialize it, you’re as capable of one as you are the other, it’s just time you have to dedicate to using all the tools.
Laila Sanahmadi
01:05:49
So, does knowing the programs sometimes matter more? Or are there just not as many people with the program knowledge?
juliabrumfield
01:05:57
In that case, for someone who only does 2D, where’s a good place to start learning 3D? What’s a good resource? I’m a VisDev student at AAU and I have no 3D modeling classes for my major
Hector Verdugo
01:06:32
@Kweku- Anytime. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sketkh Williams
01:06:35
Try them all, practice, use the one you like the best I’d imagine.
Josephine Albrektsen
01:06:38
same question as Julia, where is it good to start
Carla Keefe
01:06:46
MAYA!!!
Hensley Vanhercke
01:06:53
For those who are starting out in 3D, what would you recommend for the first steps?
Sketkh Williams
01:07:01
Love the inside ref game.
Natalie
01:07:07
I love that, "I'm a Maya main" lol
Alice Jiang
01:07:29
Aletta that happens to me fairly frequently too! I feel so silly every time that happens!
Laila Sanahmadi
01:08:24
What 3D software works well on Mac OS?
Shelby Jakubik
01:08:56
@kathleen the blog link didnt work :(
Bryan Liang
01:08:57
Can you edit and alter the kit pieces?
Natalie
01:08:57
No 3D modelers use mac, it doesn't work well at all unfortunately
Sketkh Williams
01:08:58
All of them, Mac is a graphic based OS. But if you want power you need a GPU that Mac doesn’t have.
Hussein akhdar
01:09:18
get a pc instead of a mac?
Kathleen
01:09:23
@Shelby: this one? http://blogs.academyart.edu/chats/current-student-chats.html
Howard Gin
01:09:27
Thank you for answering! Are the interfaces similar if you move from blender to zbrush
Natalie
01:09:32
ZBrush uses CPU while maya uses your graphics card
Jon Luce
01:09:32
lol at don't do creatures in maya
Andrés Díaz
01:09:35
how about combine them ??
Kathleen
01:09:38
It opened fine for me, Shelby. Just try again for me :)
Aletta Wenas
01:09:40
yes
Natalie
01:09:44
yes PC all the way for 3D
Andrés Díaz
01:09:45
maya first and then zbrush?
Aletta Wenas
01:09:52
and don't let my comment stop anyone from doing creatures in maya if you really want to
Sketkh Williams
01:10:06
@Aletta - What if you’re interested in storytelling keyframes, design is great, is there a keyframe practice for storytelling versus design?
Jon Luce
01:10:16
I agree with that statement, creatures in maya would be cray cray
Andrés Díaz
01:10:26
they cannot be part of a same process?
Shelby Jakubik
01:10:33
@Kathleen that one worked! thank you
Nicole Spina
01:10:35
For this type of 3d modeling is it better a tablet or a drawing pad?. I'm currently finishing my architecture studies and I'm planning on majoring in animation, so most of my 3d (sketchup and Revit) modeling I use just my mouse.
Kathleen
01:10:42
@Shelby, great! :)
Natalie
01:11:11
@Nicole I personally use a tablet for modeling, drawing pad works too if your screen is big enough imo
Raven Lozada
01:11:17
I learned Maya first, so Blender intimidates me @_@
Lauren Brown
01:11:22
how does dreamworks go about rendering?
Natalie
01:11:37
maya is industry standard over blender, you are good
YunHao Gai
01:11:44
rocks rock!
Carla Keefe
01:11:53
Is Mudbox still used at all?
Gabriel YOUNG
01:11:56
I saw an ad for this school on TikTok
Lauren Brown
01:12:02
what does dreamworks render with?
Natalie
01:12:15
mudbox is good to have under your belt but more studios don't use it anymore
Melissa Spearman
01:12:20
Good question Lauren!
Natalie
01:12:21
most*
Carla Keefe
01:12:25
Cool.
Lauren Brown
01:12:31
Thanks!
Sketkh Williams
01:12:33
GearHeads is the slur he’s looking for.
YunHao Gai
01:12:48
I know that a lot of studios use proprietary software. do you know how different these in-house proprietary software are compared to more mainstream softwares like maya/zbrush?
Aletta Wenas
01:12:52
no, you don't necessarily have to live in LA, but some jobs might be vey location specific
Melissa Spearman
01:13:28
I do not have a lot of experience with designing environments and architecture from scratch. Do you have any good tips to get started in this area, and where I can find some budget-friendly options for kit-bashing in ZBrush like Vincenzo is using right now?
Fermin Nieblas
01:13:42
How do you maintain focus when doing work that might take long hours of work?
Gabriel YOUNG
01:13:46
I live in Nigeria will i still be able to attend this school?
Lauren Brown
01:14:11
What is your favorite render engine(question open to everyone (: )
Mateus Tofoli
01:15:00
For those who have never had any experience with 3d, what would be a good way to start?
Natalie
01:15:12
@YunHao, studios that use in-house programs still look for you to understand programs like maya/zbrush because it makes it that easier to train you on their own software
Howard Gin
01:15:16
What do you guys think of CLIP STUDIO EX?
Gabriel YOUNG
01:15:28
i don't like Clip Studio
Sketkh Williams
01:16:11
Thank you, Aletta.
Raven Lozada
01:16:15
It Looks Like A Face!
YunHao Gai
01:16:16
i see. thank you natalie! that's a good way to think about it
Natalie
01:16:22
@Mateus I personally recommend maya first, it will give you a good understanding of important factors to keep in mind while modeling.sculpting. Like topology, edge-flow, polygons, etc
Natalie
01:16:43
You're welcome YunHao! :3
Lily Xiong
01:17:33
I'm in quite a desperate situation right now. What made you take that step towards the art pathway of life and chase it? I'm stuck between the risky but passionate path of learning game art/concept design, and the common way of life of going to a 4-year college and just doing art as a hobby.
Gabriel YOUNG
01:17:57
Wait I thought this call was for free Robux?
Lauren Brown
01:17:58
always do the passionate one

work is all day so that will be your life
Sketkh Williams
01:18:16
If it’s the industry at the moment’s standard, then Maya seems to be the one to learn for the quickest work pipeline. Note the price tag, given that it’s an AUTODesk app made by designers for designers in mind. While yes they made Sketchbook, it’s priced within every nut and bolt of it’s worth.
Hector Verdugo
01:18:47
@Lily- Its a tough question. Which path do I choose? Send me an email after the event. I can set you up with an advisor to help you with some advice. hverdugo@academyart.edu
Mateus Tofoli
01:18:57
@Natalie thanks :)
Hector Verdugo

@Lily- At the end of the day you have to bet on yourself and find something that is going to challenge you and make you happy.
Lisa Dean
01:19:12
Can you recommend laptops that support 3 D software best?
Natalie
01:19:15
You're welcome!

How much would you say adaptability comes into your job? I understand it’s a growing industry and that can be a factor, but, how often does the job require to make very quick transitions that contradict your typical methods, workflow or portfolio
Hector Verdugo
01:19:58
@Lily- The thing to know is that this isn't a dream. It's a real career if you work hard for it.
Natalie
01:20:02
@Lisa, it depends on what 3D program you want to use, Maya uses graphics card, ZBrush uses CPU. Ideally a RTX with at least an i7
Kathleen
01:20:04
@Melissa: You can request the recording link be emailed to you by completing this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SYYJ5N6

Lauren Brown
01:20:23
@Lisa as far as industry goes, many softwares require computers with nvidia graphics cards if youre looking into high quality rendering
Sketkh Williams
01:20:23
I second @Hensley’s question - @Aletta
Mohama Isa
01:20:37
can I have a link to download free photoshop 2018 offline setup
Faith Nelson
01:20:45
@Lily I did both but later on I decided to new goal and choose to do art because I'm passionate about it . Do what feel right to you.
Carla Keefe
01:21:23
I'm always copying different animation art styles.
Carla Keefe
01:21:27
It's fun!
Dan Burchfield

You have to read up on your trade/craft. Constantly.
Lily Xiong

Sketkh Williams
01:22:13
Any contract advice for Freelance Designers to be mindful of, Kill Fees? Minimums? Day-rates vs Flat-rates (I’m not asking for numbers, I’m asking for working practices in the industry.

How do you paint over the 3d rendering in photoshop?
Niquela Davila
01:23:49
How do you get a job? I mean, everybody say ''Is hard live like an artist'', I don't think that (at all), but I want to know different opinions
Sketkh Williams

@Stella - he could always take a screenshot.
Sketkh Williams
01:24:16
I’ll second @Niquela’s question as well - @Aletta
Sophia Pigman

Is there a logic behind this production pipeline Vincenzo is demoing? This feels like more work than drawing it out non destructively in a single app? Is this an industry driven pipeline or a personal one that offers his desired flexibility?

Kathleen

it is texturing, but it's a quicker way to do with keyshot since we can skip the whole UV unwrapping bit
Hensley Vanhercke

Keyshot and Octane are really fast and easy to use tools. I was able to learn it in a really short time
Natalie
01:30:39
You can use keyshot with maya but maya is in the same pipeline as Arnold so its a much smoother transition to render with Arnold. but everything is possible!
Isidora Ramirez
01:31:01
do you sometimes give the modelers all the 3d work you did, or do they start from scratch?
Alice Jiang
01:31:04
I'm really curious, so I'm reposting my question from above: What was the transition from student to the work force like? Job hunting? Beginning experiences in a job?
Cameron Schmidt
01:31:06
the screenshare is lagging really bad :(
Sketkh Williams
01:31:12

Laila Sivels

that's looking awesome
Sketkh Williams
01:31:46
I’m curious if this a pipeline driven process, vs his unique process too.
YunHao Gai
01:31:47
@isidora there are software and tool packs like Kitbash and Daz3D that allow you to use pre-made assets so you save time on the actual modelling and more of deciding the composition
Cameron Schmidt
01:32:18
Unity is pretty good if you wanna start out

What's your advice on getting hired? Do companies typically hire you for one project or offer full time positions?
Sketkh Williams
01:33:06
@Jessic - we’re also curious about this, as well as contracts and what to include in yours as a freelance artist/
Dan Burchfield
01:33:22
Doesn't the Production Designer tell you what the production needs? Or do they say...."go make futuristic city."
Hector Verdugo
01:33:23
@Lichen- We have many courses on 3D
Laila Sivels
01:33:30
^ same @Jessica
Lauren Brown

Lauren Brown
01:34:38

Hensley Vanhercke
01:34:50
How important would you say that studies have been in your student and professional life, outside of classes/work (I know it’s important, though I would love to hear your experience with them)
Jon Luce
01:35:06
so what your saying is you don't want to design like its a Univeral Studios Back Lot,... LOL
Hector Verdugo
01:35:31
@Lichen- That major does cover visual development for Live Action which covers final projects for both 2D and 3D.
Niquela Davila
01:35:43
What's more important: where do you study or ur portafolio?
Sketkh Williams
01:36:29
A portfolio is a reflection of your art, not your school, how you learn is reflected in your art.
Hector Verdugo
01:36:31
@Lichen- Animation and Visual Effects Major has more 3D animation options. Choosing your major starts with working backwards on what your career goal will be.
juliabrumfield
01:36:55
Is there any place for traditional art in the world of concept art? In animation, games, film etc?
Lauren Brown
01:37:11
Absolutely
Sketkh Williams
01:37:15
So what is a keyframe in this design concept?
Lauren Brown
01:37:20
Murals, street art etc
Jon Luce
01:37:22

Niquela Davila

YunHao Gai
01:37:27
traditional art is a skill! you can never have enough
Dan Burchfield
01:37:37
What is the percentage of Photoshop work for this concept art?
Carla Keefe
01:37:52
If you don't have a photo texture that works, and you can't find one--you can just make your own!
YunHao Gai
01:38:08
it takes 10 seconds to sketch something really quick on a piece of paper than to boot up a pc and use your software. the start of ideation usually and almost always starts on a sketchpad
Sketkh Williams
01:38:44
I’m Sketkh, I don’t know how to correct it, My name is often autocorrected, but it’s the one my mother gave me (pronounced Sketch) the irony is not lost on anyone.
Sketkh Williams
01:39:06
I meant correct it in this zoom set up, I’m happy with how correct it is.
Jon Luce
01:39:17
That's too Cool Sketkh
Sketkh Williams
01:39:26
Thank you, Jon Luce.

What is the average ratio for 3D modeling and photoshoping?
Laila Sivels

Kris Owens
01:40:18

Denise Fernandez
01:40:45
I have to go now... thank you for the webinar!
Sketkh Williams
01:40:47
@niguela Ah, my bad.
Alice Jiang
01:41:34
What was the transition from student to the work force like? Job hunting? Beginning experiences in a job?
Jessica Robinson
01:41:56
I have to leave, but thank you all for this information! I look forward to the recording.
Lauren Brown
01:42:03
Materialize is a great FREE program for making maps!
Lauren Brown
01:42:18
texture maps
Sketkh Williams
01:42:58
In windows.
Josephine Albrektsen
01:43:34
Could you do fisheye lense in these programs?
Dan Burchfield
01:43:58
Wow. Keyshot is $998
Laila Sivels
01:44:16
oh no
YunHao Gai
01:44:27
They have trials. an alternative is octane though im not sure how much it is
Dan Burchfield
01:44:28
Keyshot goes as high as $3,995
Natalie
01:44:42
Yeah Keyshot is expensive, I was lucky enough to get a ZBrush & keyshot bundle a few years ago for the same price.
Sharon Wong
01:44:44
I believe VRED in Autodesk is free for students
YunHao Gai
01:44:48
also, the trial period is way more than enough for you to learn it
Rolf Mohr
01:44:50
That's where Blender's Evee renderer comes in - completely free :)
Rolf Mohr
01:45:37
Hi :)
Hensley Vanhercke
01:45:49
Hi Rolf
YunHao Gai
01:45:58
Agreed. Maya Arnold is not too far behind from Keyshot
YunHao Gai
01:46:19
you also get realtime renders, and the ability to use HDRIs to get real time lighting changes and a large variety of preset materials
YunHao Gai
01:46:57
frankly, when you learn one software, the rest of the softwares are not too far off and can be picked up way faster than going into it brand new
Jon Luce
01:47:36
this is very true YunHao
Jon Luce
01:48:03
picking up a second is easier than the first one you choose to start on
Sketkh Williams
01:48:07
Agreed a tool is a tool, they can all be picked up and put down and picked up again.
Dan Burchfield
01:48:10
Can this be used for a dolly shot for an actually film? V
Laila Sivels
01:48:17
I'm so sorry, I have to go. Thank you for the workshop! I got a lot of great information from this :)
Lisa Dean
01:48:37
Think I missed this, is Vincenzo working on a tablet and if so what kind?
Natalie
01:48:54
He is on a drawing pad, not sure what kind
YunHao Gai
01:49:08
Dolly shots will be tougher since you'll have to have them render each shot right away. an alternative is to finish your keyframe first on the full range of movement for your camera, then use something like premiere or after effects to create the camera move
Natalie
01:49:24
Money bags! lol
Lily Xiong
01:49:44
Lol relatable
Carla Keefe
01:50:03
Oh worm?
Sketkh Williams
01:50:06
Only took us an hour to get a bursh seeker.
Carla Keefe
01:50:07
It's sunset!
YunHao Gai
01:50:21
that's super relateable ahaha
Dan Burchfield
01:50:24
Thanks YunHao
Natalie
01:51:18
I have to go, thank you everyone! Great meeting and good luck to all of my cohorts at the Academy! :D
Lisa Dean
01:51:34
Thanks Natalie!
Sketkh Williams
01:51:39
I’m lost, what is a key frame? Is this a storyboard element is this a pre vis element? Is this for some Tandem VFX work? I’m lost with how the word is being used verses its actually meaning and purpose.

How much of the base photo is left/visible still when you finish the painting?
YunHao Gai
01:57:23
I'll keep an eye out! thank you so much
Rolf Mohr
01:57:28
Question for you Aletta in case you missed it:<From Sketkh Williams to Everyone: 08:19 PMI’m lost, what is a key frame? Is this a storyboard element is this a pre vis element? Is this for some Tandem VFX work? I’m lost with how the word is being used verses its actually meaning and purpose.>
Sketkh Williams
01:58:10
Or all of the above?
Sketkh Williams
01:58:15
YES
Sketkh Williams
01:58:28
That’s my native understanding.
Carla Keefe
01:58:48
Think of it like a key moment in the visual story narrative.
Isidora Ramirez
01:58:50
is a more cartoony focused artist able to find a place in environment design? or is it necessary for them to get really close to reality in their art?
Sketkh Williams
01:58:52
Execellent
Sketkh Williams
01:58:55
Thank you
Sketkh Williams
01:59:10
That is not clear online enough.
Rolf Mohr
01:59:13
In the old days it would have been called a "production illustration" like Ralph McQuarrie used to do for a scene
Sketkh Williams
01:59:43
Thank you, Rolf. I know that from illustration, but keyframes have come up in the last couple years.
Dan Burchfield
01:59:57
Can a keyframe artist also freelance as a matte artist?
Rolf Mohr
02:00:03
Yeah these days 'key frame' tends to be used for the same thing
Stella Fiorello
02:00:23
Do you ever have to hold back on the key frames and design bases on what would be cheap to make fo the film?
Dan Burchfield
02:00:24
digital matte artist
Sketkh Williams
02:01:04
So Vincenzo’s workflow offers him the flexibility to anticipate commercial client wants/needs. Which makes sense for it being a industry pipeline.
Josephine Albrektsen
02:01:31
When you use photos as a base for painting, like you did With the clouds, do you Paint over everything or do you leave some of the actual photo in the final design?
Sketkh Williams
02:01:33
Such great insight, thank you Vincenzo.
Dan Burchfield
02:01:37
Thank Aletta
Kris Owens
02:01:43
Any advice on getting your first job in this industry especially as a freelancer? What was that process like?
Dan Burchfield
02:01:51
Thanks Aletta
Sketkh Williams
02:02:37
I blame zoom.
Lily Xiong
02:02:43
This was a question I asked previously. What was your guy's transition from high school to college? How important were scholarships? Or did you manage to catch a job straight out of high school?
YunHao Gai
02:03:14
oh yeah i can actually hear the GFX card screaming
Lily Xiong
02:03:44
Yes that too lol
Sketkh Williams
02:04:22
Preach.
Carla Keefe
02:04:28
My mentor is always harassing me for not watching comic book-based movies.
Carla Keefe
02:04:41
But I'm busy making my own comics!!
Lily Xiong
02:05:00
omg I was there haha
Sketkh Williams
02:05:35
@Carla Your mentor’s point is moot when he is harassing you about it.
Carla Keefe
02:05:43
LMAO
YunHao Gai
02:05:49
I feel that so much
Sketkh Williams
02:05:49
It did, Aletta
Dan Burchfield
02:06:03
Congratulations on working on the new Jurassic Park movie, Aletta!
Carla Keefe
02:06:07
Sometimes I agree with my mentor though. It's 2020 and I still haven't seen Into the Spiderverse.
Jon Luce
02:06:20
you can model to for all I care,..... Aaaaaas yooooou wiiiiiiish
Sketkh Williams
02:06:37
Spiderverse is a genuinely good movie that happens to be a Marvel movie.
Sketkh Williams
02:06:45
But it is good for artists.
Carla Keefe
02:06:45
I know that much! XD
Sketkh Williams
02:06:51
Good for you.
Josephine Albrektsen
02:06:55
into the spiderverse is amazing, incredibly inspiring as a future vis dev artist for feature animation
Carla Keefe
02:07:18
It appears to be a visual masterpice, but that's just from stills and trailers I've seen.
Raven Lozada
02:07:24
How do you know when your work is good enough to make things professionally
Sketkh Williams
02:07:26
You’re never gonna stop learning, your portfolios never gonna be finished.
Hector Verdugo
02:07:27
Loved Spiderverse. Amazing artwork.
Spencer Blunt
02:07:56
Vinnie can you give your speech on the aspects of the visdev field like the pay and work etc
YunHao Gai
02:07:59
I should definitely go towards this. I have never thought about it from this point, and I'm not satisfied with my portfolio either
Melissa Spearman
02:08:02
Indeed. Do you have tips on kit-bashing and incorporating complex details in your work?
Sketkh Williams
02:08:37
Can Vincenzo clarify by what he meant with “Skillsets”
Sketkh Williams
02:09:00
IE what does he mean by skillsets in regards to portfolio crafting?
Kris Owens
02:09:09
Can you elaborate about getting your first job? Everything feels so secretive in the industry sometimes and it’s frustrating. How do you get your foot in the door when you’ve learned, done the work, and are ready but have no where to start?
Carla Keefe
02:09:23
I have a comics portfolio and a 2D animation character design portfolio.
Carla Keefe
02:09:37
Tailor your portfolio for where you want to be.
Sketkh Williams
02:10:09
@Kris - we’ve been asking about contracts and 1099s vs w2s since hour one.
Sketkh Williams
02:10:28
Not much of a peep unless they’re saving it for a conversation at the end.
Jon Luce
02:10:30
I like how Marshall vandruff and Stan Proko say it,... find your artistic parents and emulate that. Who do you want to be when you grow up.
Alice Jiang
02:11:04
I've got to leave now! Thank you so much to Aletta and Vincenzo for their amazing insight!
Faith Nelson
02:11:11
have to go byebye
Sketkh Williams
02:11:15
Same
Lily Xiong
02:11:40
Thank you, you responses really encouraged me! I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a parent who doesn't believe art can make money. Thanks again!
Lily Xiong
02:11:46

Carla Keefe
02:12:14
Everything you see has been designed by an artist, Lily. There will always be art.
Carla Keefe
02:12:23
And work for artists.
Dan Burchfield
02:12:46
What is your canvas size for this?
Lauren Brown
02:13:05
Mood, dont listen to that, do what makes you happy, the world is full of possibilities u jus needa know where to look
Dan Burchfield
02:13:27
4000 x 1000 pixels?
Carla Keefe
02:13:39
1k on the shortest side seems small
Aletta Wenas
02:13:52
4000 is the minimal
Dan Burchfield
02:14:07
8000 x 4000?
Aletta Wenas
02:14:07
so whichever is the shortest side of your canvas, minimal 4k
Aletta Wenas
02:14:19
and this is a keyframe specific point
Aletta Wenas
02:14:33
not necessarily true if you guys are just doing quick sketches and so forth
Aletta Wenas
02:14:42
those can be done at a lower res image
Carla Keefe
02:15:41
Oh dear. I REALLY need a new computer then. I was working on a desktop wallpaper sized piece at 4k resolution and my poor graphics card almost burned out!
Sofi Hefner
02:16:50
I have to go now this has given me a lot more insight. Thank you so much for the opportunity to learn from you guys. I look forward to learning at the academy 😄
Josephine Albrektsen
02:17:16
What type of computer is best for running Heavy software like 3D programs and Photoshop, if you wanna work on Professional industry Level work?
Hector Verdugo
02:17:22
@Sofi- Excited to have you!
Carla Keefe
02:17:46
It's more about the graphics card and processor from my understanding. I can't really say much else. Can anyone else make a suggestion or two?
Rolf Mohr
02:17:51
(Bear in mind Aletta said that resolution is required only if you need to "future proof" your art in case it might be used later for marketing or something.)
Collins Chang
02:18:00
how many keyframes does it need for like film or video game?
Aletta Wenas
02:19:08
yes it was hdri in keyshot
Carla Keefe
02:19:59
