An old teacher of mine used to say that practice makes better! She said that "practice makes perfect" was false because there is always ways to improve your work, but the more practice you have the better you are. (That is to say, I'm sure he's been practicing a very long time to get to the level he's at!)
Delta Stowe
01:22:35
Just wow..... I love how you can tell his passion in artwork and even him explaining. Just so thankful to be a part of workshops like this and how he self critiques himself in an amazing manner

Delta Stowe
01:26:24
Love how he said he was boring...… definitely not
Austin Ozaraga
01:26:34
The most critical habit I learned in clothed figure drawing was to observe the relationships of shapes and angles from important body/clothing landmarks. Chuck Pyle would demonstrate this on the online classes as well.
Hector Verdugo
01:26:42
@Everyone- Never boring with Chuck!

Layla Liekens
01:43:23
Yeah definitely!
Anita Williams
01:43:43
what about when you're adding fat or curves for larger or full bodies figures
Devashree Jhaveri
01:43:44
are u taking classes in fall?
Alicia Rodriguez-Acosta
01:43:50
Yeah, the enthusiasm makes me feel like I need that not only for the excitement but also for the mistakes.
Brandie Isley
01:43:51
Will we learn more about this in the anatomy class?
Melanie Martin
01:44:12
Where can we get one of those models?
Michael Fisher
01:44:12
the sketch looked stretched, but it made the drawing feel more energetic to me.
Taylor Gee
01:44:29
Is there a reason why you prefer conte crayons over anything else? Also what other materials do you like to sketch with?
Lucian Lucero
01:44:35
@Brandie you’ll learn the bone protrusions and surface musculature.
Delta Stowe
01:44:46

Stella Fiorello
01:45:24
Can you ask what type of ecorche?
Elise Clare
01:45:37
I second @Anita's question: How to deal with fuller figures and exaggeration?
J. Exum
01:46:51
How do you work with proportions? I don't know if I'm alone with this but with human figures and drawing from life in general I struggle a lot with making good proportions.
Rachel Kleinman
01:47:25
Same here! I get that shape and then see the legs should be double as long.
Julissa Esquivel
01:47:46
@J. Exum you’re not alone I’ve drawn too many cartoons during quarantine lol
María Ortiz
01:48:05
Chuck, I've also heard people talk about he 7 and a half rule, where you take the person's head and repeat it 7 times and a half and you have the accurate height according to the head. Do you happen to use that? Or do you recommend it?
Taylor Gee
01:48:20
Is there a reason why you prefer conte crayons over anything else? Also what other materials do you like to sketch with?
Farhan Alif
01:48:26
yeah its very difficult to change style from cartoon to realism
Sabrina Bruno
01:48:31
Any tips for doing timed drawings, especially short drawings? I tend to sometimes get lost in the details and take longer to draw.
J. Exum
01:48:41
I tend to focus on creature design and making my own things, its helped my anatomy but made my ability to draw from life atrocious
Brandie Isley
01:48:41
good question @maria
Melanie Martin
01:48:44
As an Illustrator will we take the cold figure drawing class?
Alicia Rodriguez-Acosta
01:49:22
What about real life references in exaggeration to muscles... like body sculpting dedicated people? (Like The Rock and all of them?) Or would their exaggerated bodies not work as good reference at all?
Devashree Jhaveri
01:49:24
@maria Ortiz - that’s mostly in fashion drawing and yeah it does help.. but that’s not super realistic
jaymie Gough
01:49:32

It takes practice constantly thinking about the weight of your hand on the pencil
Alexander Gomes
02:11:08
the more you push the thicker or stronger your line
Julissa Esquivel
02:11:14
The best way in my option is that if you use a pencil start at the end and as you learn to be soft slowly move in
Darrell Nicholson
02:11:20
is there a key fundamental detail you look for when you position your characters?
Devashree Jhaveri
02:11:25

This was my first time attending your class and loved it but I have a question. When I do my drawings they become more cartoony at the end how can I keep the realisticness
Anita Williams
02:15:06
@ilayda that's an excellent question!!!!
Lily Xiong
02:15:06
I really admire how you have such soft yet focused illustration. It's not super detailed yet it does such a good job catching the eye! Looking at your illustration makes me feel quite relaxed
Darrell Nicholson
02:15:15
does the fundamentals of exaggeration in illustration also apply to design or any other field of drawing?
Delta Stowe
02:15:26
Is it better to understand a realistic model before a stylized version? Or does it really matter... also what is your style preference personally?

What are the best tools for plein air? Gouache, watercolor etc?
ilayda tükel
02:15:59
@anita thank youu , hope he answers
Melanie Martin
02:16:27
What are your basic fundamentals that you use as an illustrator?
Aria Ayres
02:16:36
I heard somewhere that it is best in art to understand the rules before you break them, so it's usually better to understand a realistic model before a stylized one
Melanie Martin
02:16:39
ABSOLUTELY
Delta Stowe
02:17:15
That is what I thought but wasn`t positive and needed another artist`s opinion and thoughts :)

Love that writers that make you see pictures
Alexis Barnes
02:30:36
I hope this doesn't seem offensive or anything but it's so refreshing seeing an "older" artist such as yourself so open to artists using digital tools as well as drawing "manga" and "anime" styles. You often hear traditional artists talking down towards digital artists.
Alexis Barnes
02:31:40
and by "older" I just mean you were taught in a very different industry than I will be for example
Julissa Esquivel
02:31:59
Chuck you made it into my sketchbook congratulations
Malik Narayanin
02:32:01
@Alexis Barnes, now that you mention it, you're right. Chuck, you seem to be open to all mediums of art and don't care as to how art is made. That is a quality that I can respect.

@Taylor Gee I just started using illo sketchbooks but for years I’ve been using Daler Romney
Devashree Jhaveri
02:48:08
hair are my fav.. i just let me hand flow
Beverly Perez
02:48:48
I don't, hair has always been good for me, even before I started drawing as an adult
Shoen Tripp
02:48:48
@taylor Gee and Cachet as my former school IDAT was selling those brands and I bordered them over the years that I went there
Melanie Martin
02:48:51
My hair looks too choppy and doesn’t really flow
Taylor Gee
02:49:15
Oh nice
Giordan Bercheni
02:49:18
@Melanie with me it's coloring hair digitally, but on paper is no problem.
Alexis Barnes
02:49:27
Question: You are so open-minded about digital mediums and resources. Since you were taught as a more traditional artist, did you find it difficult to adjust to the wave of digital art like when tablets started coming out and were you worried the value of your type of work would decrease?
Devashree Jhaveri
02:49:29
try giving them a bit of waves or curls at the end..
Delta Stowe
02:49:38
Your work and words are truly inspiring and amazing Chuck <3
Melanie Martin
02:49:40
I have never tried doing digitally
Beverly Perez
02:49:41
start at the scalp, draw them as strands, they come out good that way
Layla Liekens
02:49:49
I don't have *too* much trouble with hair, only a little, but what sometimes helps me is when I start from the root of the hair to the end, lifting your hand up a little and quickly can give it more flow.
Beverly Perez
02:50:08
exactly

02:50:12
Thanks guys

I always block out hair and then add infuser lines for wisps and such after I’ve established everything else
Malik Narayanin
02:50:36
@melanie, if it helps, don't think of hair as if the individual strands are two dimensional. hair has volume. try and give it some shadowing where needed. also, don't homogenise the hair. show each strand as much as possible.
Delta Stowe

Layla Liekens
02:54:27
From my opinion I would definitely say cross-hatching is acceptable. The darker the shadow is the more lines you usually should put. It all really depends on what your style is and what you want it to be :)
