50:58
Awesome! Hello from Mexico CETYS University
Becky Johnson_Program Manager
51:18
@Erikson, SOAR was a team of people. Alyce was the Director, Writer/Creator. https://vimeo.com/128904071
Andrina Vann
51:18
where can we find those characters?
Klary James
51:36
Is Blender the same as Maya?
Dylan Montalbo
51:55
I'm actually wondering about that as well.
Eli Harris
51:55
Is Poser different from Maya?
Cody Jardin
51:56
It has similar aspects
Cody Jardin
52:25
Blender I have used both controls are main difference imo
Eli Harris
52:57
Is Maya good if you want to make 2d animation
Klary James
53:10
Okay because I practice in blender since I don’t have Maya.
Andrew Galusha
53:19
I would suggest using the Blender gease pencil if you want to make 2D animations
Cody Jardin
53:31
^^
Delroy Edwards
53:34
Will we be having a future webinar specific to 2D Animation?
Eli Harris
53:42
Oh ok
Delroy Edwards
54:37
Thank you Shaun
Becky Johnson_Program Manager
54:41
@Delroy several people have asked. Yes, let’s do that. We’ll keep you posted.
Mahfouz Afada
55:08
what is the name of the program that she's using?
Delroy Edwards
55:10
Thank you Becky. Looking forward to it
Cody Jardin
55:23
Maya
Andrew Galusha
55:33
And Klary blender and Maya are similar in what they strive to do but have different aspects apart of them
Harshitha -
56:01
any upcoming wrokshops on digital painting or concept art?
Shaun Featherstone
56:11
@mahfouz Maya
Shaun Featherstone
57:01
@Harshitha - I believe Vis Dev is working on one for August
Klary James
57:08
Thank you!
Mary Clark
57:09
Would be neat if there was a workshop for storyboard artists
Oakley
57:21
^
Andrew Galusha
57:24
Geneerally Maya is the industry standard (Disney uses it for animating, they use something else that I forgot for rendering), but Blender has been making a significant rise in many studios such as Tangent Animation (they made Next Gen on Netflix and The Man In The High Castle uses Blender)
Andrew Galusha
57:35
@Klary
Hector Verdugo
57:35
@Mary- We will continue to add more and more workshops
Shaun Featherstone
57:49
@Mary - Wouldn’t it though! I will be talking to John Korellis, our Story Lead about doing one~!
Eli Harris
57:51
Wait how can you change the camera angle when doing the animation
Haoyu Zhang
58:07
do we have chance to review this recorded workshop video in the future?
Delroy Edwards
58:16
I'm just excited to get started in the Fall. Looking forward to working with all of you as well.
Kathleen
58:38
@Haoyu (and any other students): You can request the recording link be emailed to you by completing this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B9HHB33
Carl Crocker
58:49
Super excited to start in fall as well
Amanda Robinette
58:49
Is there a certain program or a few options of programs students should use for classes?
Shaun Featherstone
58:52
@Hayou - You’ll get your very own copy!
lannonwilson
01:00:10
Do we have to rig our own characters? Or, the characters already in Maya?
Haoyu Zhang
01:00:10
Thanks so much!
Klary James
01:00:50
Do the bigger animation studios use Maya more than Blender?
Edwin Solis
01:00:56
usually yes
Edwin Solis
01:01:15
but blender is great as well, I speak from personal experience
Kathleen
01:01:19
Students: For those that want to watch this workshop again at a later date: You can request the recording link be emailed to you by completing this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B9HHB33
Jonathan Osorio
01:01:20
hello, I have to ask. when is the 2D animation webinar that is coming up soon, and how do I apply for it?
Amy Lovejoy
01:01:31
characters are available via downloads in the classes.
Shaun Featherstone
01:02:00
@Klarry - Most larger studios use proprietary software, the smaller studios will take advantage of the off the shelf software more
lannonwilson
01:02:11
I love blender
Shaun Featherstone
01:02:20
Go Tommy!
Rebekka Taylor
01:02:34
as an 3d animation student already, you learn how to use maya before getting into character classes. you learn how to build objects first and then you start getting into character animation and rigging
Rebekka Taylor
01:03:29
I was in Virginie’s character animation class last semester in the spring and I’ll be in character animation 2 in the fall and she let me know that she teaches that class as well.
lannonwilson
01:03:48
Ok Maya looks harder than blender is that true?
Samantha Hymanson
01:03:57
@Rebekka Taylor How?
Delroy Edwards
01:04:09
I think there are Pros and Cons to both
Hector Verdugo
01:04:10
@Christin- Are you currently using the adobe creative cloud?
Cody Jardin
01:04:16
seems like it at first but once you get used to it, its fine
Chris Culpepper
01:04:17
Not really in my opinion. Especially since blender has the ability to use common industry shortcuts now
Shaun Featherstone
01:04:30
@Marla - The characters are available to all students enrolled at the school, we can advise on some interesting free characters available online - no where near as good as ours - that you can use. My email sfeatherstone@academyart.edu
Edwin Solis
01:04:43
Blender in my opinion is a bit more user friendly
Chris Culpepper
01:04:50
I’ve been using Maya for about 10 years and I actually find Blender a little more difficult
Rebekka Taylor
01:04:51
its the way the classes are built. you learn from the bottom up. when you get further into classes, the more complicated they get
Eli Harris
01:04:56
Wait is it possible to change the frame rate
Rebekka Taylor
01:05:15
i find Blender harder to use as well. I’m so used to Maya anymore
Jonathan Osorio
01:05:25
hello, I have to ask. when is the 2D animation webinar that is coming up soon, and how do I apply for it?
Carl Crocker
01:05:33
I agree with Chris though I guess it depends on comfort of use.
Cody Jardin
01:06:18
There are more youtube tutorials for Blender than Maya. I learned most of what I know all in Blender years before enrolling.
Micah Boyd
01:06:40
@Jonathan Osorio, I am also a 2D animator and would love to know as well.
Carl Crocker
01:06:40
spline is that like easing keyframes in after effects?
Chris Culpepper
01:06:49
Yeah Blender does have a huge following. It’s great that it’ open source.
Rebekka Taylor
01:06:58
once you get used to the interface with Maya, its actually super easy to use
Shaun Featherstone
01:07:11
@Carl - Exactly. Very similar principle
Delroy Edwards
01:07:15
Its my understanding that students get access to Maya when in the 3D program, do we get access to any 2D Animation software in that Program?
Erica Eng
01:07:16
@Eli Harris Yes, the button is beside the timeline. It's a menu that pops up with framerates you can choose.
Eli Harris
01:07:36
Oh ok
Jonathan Osorio
01:07:38
nice to meet a fellow 2D animator @Micah
Rebekka Taylor
01:07:57
2d animation, you get Toonboom, but there is also an app on your iPad that you can download for $5 that i used for my 2d animation class
Shaun Featherstone
01:08:03
@Delroy - Of course! You will start your foundations in animation by animating in 2D
Delroy Edwards
01:08:23
Thank you Shaun
Rebekka Taylor
01:08:25
I went back and forth a little with the app on my iPad and Toonboom, both are great programs
Sarah
01:08:27
woops, didn't change to all panelists and attendees. as animator, is your job solely focused on pathways and movements or do you also create characters and objects?
lannonwilson
01:08:27
I only have blender I can only make my objects change colors and I am only using basic objects. But they smoking weed tho.
Cody Jardin
01:09:03
Particle systems alone are fun in blender I made a whole Haunted house that was a fun 3 months
Steven Wilson
01:09:12
is this a 6 second video animation for this jump? I can do expressions and gestures with characters in Maya but I'm real sorry at walking, I need lots of practice...
Cody Jardin
01:09:38
and the compositor playing with the node trees were always fun and then PBR came out in Blender and oh man I went nuts!
lannonwilson
01:09:42
a whole house…awesome I only made a donut. dance
Shaun Featherstone
01:09:43
@Sarah - It depends on what you want your skill base to be. We do have 3D modeling included in the animation program, but we encourage animators to really focus on performance
lannonwilson
01:10:08
Blender is the bomb!!
Edwin Solis
01:10:20
I want to try and get a better understanding of animating on 1's,2's and 3's, when I animate I find myself losing pace.
lannonwilson
01:10:37
I am scared of Maya
Klary James
01:10:39
Fackted
Delroy Edwards
01:10:44
So is Krita, which I use for 2D
Cody Jardin
01:10:53
My Claymation class really helped with timing my first semester.
Rebekka Taylor
01:10:56
Maya is super easy once you learn the interface and play around with it
Jonathan Osorio
01:11:00
I used krita as well
Jonathan Osorio
01:11:09
it’s really complicated to use
Chris Culpepper
01:11:13
@Steven you will learn the basics like ball bounces & walks in intro 3D animation courses
lannonwilson
01:11:14
What is kris?
J. Colby Exum
01:11:17
Krita is a a good program
Shaun Featherstone
01:11:28
@Edwin - We can give you a good grounding in which method is more appropriate for which context and character moment.
lannonwilson
01:11:32
I never tried Krite
J. Colby Exum
01:11:37
Albeit I just moved out of it to use CSP while it was on sale
Chris Culpepper
01:11:47
@lanno don’t be scared, once you start working in it, it’s tremendous
lannonwilson
01:11:57
Why is Krite a great program?
Jordan-Alexander Dawkins
01:12:00
I've always used Blender so can't compare it to Maya. It's always been a great tool for me and I'm always getting better so don't be afraid to start with it for now. As of recently it's become very industry friendly.
Paula Delgado
01:12:09
Krita is good but I found it somehow a little difficult to work
Jonathan Osorio
01:12:11
it’s a really good program for 2D animation, but it’s also really complicated, I wouldn’t recommend it unless actually know how to use it properly
Erica Eng
01:12:15
How's CSP for 2D anim?
Delroy Edwards
01:12:16
I seriously can't wait to get started
Jonathan Osorio
01:12:23
I still have trouble in it from time to time
Jonathan Osorio
01:12:27
on*
Jason DeGuzman
01:12:30
in my opinion, Krita is pretty good, but it is a bit wonky
Amanda Robinette
01:12:38
Between Krita, Blender and Maya, is there one that's better for a beginner? Or are they all pretty good for that?
Jonathan Osorio
01:12:39
yeah
Steven Wilson
01:12:40
I've switched to doing opticals but if I'm ever going to get my short film made at this school I'll have to get back into animation again. I'm real good at modeling environments though...
lannonwilson
01:12:40
Ok I will not be scared of Maya. I would like to make my Cadillac and make it move with a turkey
Harshitha -
01:12:41
How effective is After Effects for 2D animation

01:14:14
Can parts of this process apply to 2D animation as well??
Klary James
01:14:22
Thaaaankk youuuu!!!!!
Jonathan Osorio
01:14:30
hey, I was wondering. is the academy of art university and actual university funded by the states. because I’m trying to get my MFA (Masters of the Fine Arts).
Panote Nuchprayoon
01:14:39
How would you approach switching between IK and FK in a shot? or would you keep them separated?
Boluwatife Oriowo
01:14:41
@Oakley This process relies heavily on 2D animation fundamentals.
Steven Wilson
01:14:46
I learned how to do ball bounces on my own in maya and I built my own snow globe like in citizen kane and worked on a manual and created an ocean....
lannonwilson
01:14:50
Is Maya better than Blrnder?
Oakley
01:15:00
Stellar! Thanks a million~
Larry Reed
01:15:11
how do you animate the background/scene
Rebekka Taylor
01:15:12
Character Animation!
JAIN KOO
01:15:16
When you make an animation, would making many squishes of the character make some trouble?
Sandy Siu
01:15:20
In an actual workplace situation, how collaborative would an animation like the one you created normally be at a large studio?
Rebekka Taylor
01:15:36
I didn’t realize you were in France while taking your class last semester Virginie!
J. Colby Exum
01:15:46
oo
Eli Harris
01:15:50
What if you want to add effects onto your animation
Jonathan Osorio
01:15:54
hello, I have to ask. when is the 2D animation webinar that is coming up soon, and how do I apply for it?
Sandy Siu
01:16:08
What prerequisites are expected for graduate level classes?
Jonathan Osorio
01:16:15
hey, I was wondering. is the academy of art university and actual university funded by the states. because I’m trying to get my MFA (Masters of the Fine Arts).
Chris Culpepper
01:16:22
That’s ME!
Denise González
01:16:22
What other courses will we watch in this webinar?
Geoffrey Chappell
01:16:24
On average how long does it take you to pose each character position, including in-betweens?
Delroy Edwards
01:16:26
Nice
David Kinns
01:16:31
About how long does it take to go through and actually pose all those keys for am animation like this?
Carl Crocker
01:16:39
now I saw someone had trouble with walk cycles and I agree, though I know there are often pre-generated walk cycles that you can adjust is that a common tool.
Adriana Martínez
01:16:49
Hello, when is the 2d animation workshop?
Hector Verdugo
01:16:53
@ Zoey- Great question. Faculty will use a variety of ways to review work. Generally they will provide feedback with mark ups and record feedback so students can see the feedback put into play on projects
Samantha Hymanson
01:17:11
As a student how can we get Maya and the models to use on our home computers?
Hector Verdugo
01:17:25
@Zoey - A best practice is to submit a project early for feedback, then work on improving your project before you submit for grading.
Denise González
01:17:58
Maya is free with your university mail address
Hector Verdugo
01:18:06
The faculty want to help you to build the best portfolio you can while you're here.
Becky Johnson_Program Manager
01:18:10
@Jonathan, there is a Vis Dev workshop coming up. There will be a link sent. We will chat with the 2D Department to ask for workshop.
Samantha Hymanson
01:18:22
@Denise Thank you
J. Colby Exum
01:18:34
Are there any major differences between animating for games and animating for movies?
Jonathan Osorio
01:18:38
ok, thank you
Denise González
01:18:43
You’re welcome! :)
Delroy Edwards
01:18:49
I know working isn't normally seen as fun, but do you have fun when working day to day at an animation company?
Hector Verdugo
01:18:51
@Samantha- You also receive the adobe creative cloud as a student. The software keys are provided the day each semester starts in our student portals.
Sarah
01:18:56
do animator's/ most art careers work from home mostly?
Samuel Ortiz
01:18:56
can someone whos in amination do the voice over acting for the character in a movie as well.
Darby Bittner
01:19:24
wow nice
Cody Jardin
01:19:24
ILM is a dream!
Amanda Robinette
01:19:40
Is there a certain program app that classes will suggest or require us to use once Fall Semester starts up in September? Or is there a good one particular that you would suggest for a beginner?
Hector Verdugo
01:19:45
@Delroy- Generally people get into these fields because they are passionate about them. I am sure it can be very challenging but at the same time it's doing something you love.
Amy Lovejoy
01:19:46
posing characters can take from 5min to 30 min per pose. It depends on how drastic the movement was or complex the pose is.
Delroy Edwards
01:19:53
That sounds like a blast.
Klary James
01:19:53
I get my inspiration from lucid dreaming!

Have you ever met someone who was able to become successful in both makeup ( either SFX or Stage ), etc.) and animation? If so, do you know how they accomplished this? I have a passion for both of these careers and wish to see how I can get degrees in both
Klary James
01:22:09
@Iannonwilson I gotta give it to you, you been cracking me up!
Hector Verdugo
01:22:33

I’m in the GAM department, but am interested to take ANM221, character animation. What would the prerequisite be to take that class. I have taken Intro to Maya GAM105. Is GAM202 equivalent to ANM202.

Delroy Edwards
01:30:01
Super excited
Darby Bittner
01:30:02
sounds like a good class
Jennifer Arreola
01:30:16
sounds very exciting!!
Carl Crocker
01:31:00
is the difference between mo-cap and keying the whole idea of the animation falling flat without like the draw back or exaggerated movement like she was mentioning?

01:31:00
sounds entertaining

01:31:00
What about using a strobe lights to film a animation cycle? Larry Reed
Chris Culpepper

Is the acting class available for online students?
Darby Bittner
01:31:13
yes I agree
Klary James
01:31:23
@iannonwilson I have a similar goal! Keep moving forward!
Paula Delgado
01:31:46
Do you think rigging is dying and if so is it important to learn it?
Mary Clark
01:31:50
I was nervous taking an acting class. After taking it I am still get nervous acting in front of people
Delroy Edwards
01:31:51
@Cheri, I am an online student
Samuel Ortiz
01:31:54
has anyone thats a animator ever done the voice for a main character for a movie is it possible
lannonwilson
01:31:58
@ k. James and you stay strong as well . Thank you very much
Cody Jardin
01:33:17
I had your class last year learned a lot!
Hector Verdugo
01:33:18
@Paula- You want to learn rigging to understand so many important parts of the animation process. That a fundamental skill that only helps you to be a better animator.
Klary James
01:33:34
Your Welcome!
David Kinns
01:33:41
Is there an expectation of large scale prior experience or knowledge for the MA program?
Gemini Davis
01:33:44
How are the online classes compared to face-to-face animation & vfx classes? Can students get the same attention and interaction in both?
Eli Harris
01:33:48
If you want to do fight scenes how would you go about it
Darby Bittner
01:34:14
It would also be helpful to know rigging as an animator to be able to fix little things if needed so you don't have to go to the rigger all of the time you know
Chris Culpepper
01:34:20
@Gemini I’m an online student and I highly recommend it!
Chris Culpepper
01:34:40
All my instructors have been highly attentive and helpful
AYANLADE TEMITOPE

Chris Culpepper

Virginie is awesome!
Sandy Siu
01:34:50
Same question as David Kinns - what’s the expectation for experiences of MA students? I come from Theater and have 10 years of work in film but in costume design
Alithea Collins
01:34:57
How does that work for AA ANM and VFX?
Adriana Martínez
01:35:22
Is character design a topic that includes the animation program?
Delroy Edwards
01:35:53
I've toured Blue Sky, amazing Studio in CT

Pipelines make you wonder how Ray Harryhausen even finished any of his movies! Crazy!
Cody Jardin
01:37:54
Personally I have done Modeling to animation compostiing and lighting. I find them all amazing and difficult to follow one over any other.
lannonwilson
01:37:55
I keep wondering if we have to change our style of drawing?
Delroy Edwards
01:39:11
@Lannon I don't think so. I feel as long as you can grasp the concepts you're taught and apply them to your style you should be able to be graded well
Sarah
01:39:21
@hector, if someone has a degree in their artistic field, would you still recommend they obtain a master's or is master's just to help people with broad backgrounds specialize?
Jessica Guo
01:39:34
when it comes to animation, does everything have to be digital or are some parts also made using traditional methods?
Klary James
01:39:37
Virginie have you worked on any movie films?
Cody Jardin
01:39:49
Question, are there any projects Virginie has worked on that she feels she got lost in and found it difficult to pull away from?
Rob Baskerville
01:39:53
would they teach with a degree in artistic field?
Eli Harris
01:40:06
What if you want to make traditional animations what programs would you use
Jessica Guo
01:40:25

Hector Verdugo
01:56:08

Darby Bittner
01:59:40
That's pretty good
Hector Verdugo
01:59:53
@Jonathan- It depends on a few factors. I'll get you specifics when I email you back. The school only charges students for the classes their are taking. So we have to narrow down you program and how many classes you may need to graduate to give you more precise answer. Hope that makes sense.
Darby Bittner
01:59:55
I never thought of it that way
Lea Grand’Maison
02:00:14
