Directed Study are the courses that the students select with faculty to support their MFA thesis.
Hiwot Gille
01:15:34
can you explain that a bit please?
Madison Burke
01:15:48
wow that's incredible
John Beeson
01:16:03
Brianna Griebel watching on YouTube asks: Do you find that people don't take you as seriously when you are young/new in the field?
Reid Raukar
01:16:14
Hiwot - What are you referring to?
Hiwot Gille
01:16:55
Reid Rakura- about Direct study?
Heshan Herath
01:17:15
wow super
Reid Raukar
01:18:14
MFA degrees have 6 classes of Directed Study. They take place in the back half of the degree once a student has passed midpoint review. These courses are handpicked by the student with the help of faculty mentors that they feel will best support their thesis.
Hiwot Gille
01:19:01
thanks
Jacquelyn Roberto
01:20:12
THANK YOU for speaking about managing with family!

Lots of tourists as well that need to travel
Ashley Paz
01:24:06
What were some of the methods you try when you feel insecure with your style and stuck in terms of moving forward?
Reid Raukar
01:24:54
Great question. I am going to start feeding questions to the group shortly.
Sevilla Smith
01:26:11
Did you ever feel doubts when you were first introduced into the world of art and thinking about forming a career out of it? How did you overcome them?
Heshan Herath
01:26:30

Heshan Herath
01:27:05
This is good program
Oscar Pena
01:29:44
how do you know when you are done with a painting?
Reid Raukar
01:30:37
I will ask that one shortly.
Reid Raukar
01:30:49
I am keeping track of all questions!
Mary Zou
01:31:02
"how long would they take?"
Mary Zou
01:31:11
"forever, you want them you wait for them."
Nadia Summers
01:31:18
How do you go about pitching galleries?
Alexis Stern
01:32:23
Hi my name is Alexis Stern. What should new students expect? How can high schoolers like me prepare for art school? Im in my junior year and was wondering what to expect.
Hiwot Gille
01:32:38
how do you get your own way or style?
Nadia Summers
01:32:50
How do you price your work?
Andrew Rumments
01:33:46
Oh that's brilliant--even reflecting in the studio probably doesn't put the work in many different lighting conditions
Nadia Summers
01:35:14
When you got started, how do you manage your budget to afford enough material/paint not to compromise your work?
Reid Raukar
01:35:33
Hi Alexis. I would recommend Pre-College Art Experience classes (PCAE). These are free art classes for high school students. Taught by the same instructors that teach out students.
Reid Raukar
01:35:50
https://www.academyart.edu/academics/pre-college-art-experience/
Reid Raukar
01:36:24
I would recommending starting there. Draw often. Take advantage of opportunities to explore art in your current school and community.
Reid Raukar
01:36:34
I will ask the panel as well!
Nadia Summers
01:37:12
What’s your point of view on digital galleries/social media?
Alexis Stern
01:38:13
Thanks!
Nadia Summers
01:38:26
How do you tend to your body after hours of painting?
Belén Borges
01:40:19
This is my first year in University in Uruguay, but can i take that classes? for experience
Reid Raukar
01:41:05
Belen - Many students take Fine Art classes as personal enrichment. You do not need to be degree seeking to take classes. Feel free to email me at rraukar@academyart.edu
Hiwot Gille
01:41:53
Reid- I am at saint paul college to transfer and can I take the pre college art classes?
Reid Raukar
01:42:27
Pre-College courses are only available for students currently in high school. Once someone has graduated form high school they are no longer eligible.
Hiwot Gille
01:42:44
thanks
Reid Raukar
01:43:07
Hiwot - Feel free to email me if you would like to speak with an admissions representative to explore transfer options. My email is rraukar@academyart.edu

01:44:26
With your schedule, how much time do you take to study/learn or brainstorm what you want to create next?
Heshan Herath
01:45:27
sr..how much cost is graphic disaniner course in Art Academy .
Reid Raukar
01:45:28
FA 423 Abstract 1 would be a good place to start. Really depends on current skill level. It would not be the first painting class to jump into.
Reid Raukar
01:46:47
Hi Heshan - Feel free to email me. Multiple factors determine cost including if someone is a international student or domestic student. My email is rraukar@academyart.edu
Nadia Summers
01:48:46
How do you keep a finger on the pulse in terms of trends/demand?
Emanuel Reyes
01:49:49
Is the fine art pre-college class a good choice to achieve something similar to what they are doing right now?
Reid Raukar
01:50:28
Emanuel - Not really. It is a stepping stone and introduction to painting. The level of mastery they have secured comes form years and years of training.
Raphael Davidov
01:54:51
What is Sung’s full name? I would like to see his work. Thank you.
Hiwot Gille
01:55:16
how do you choose the right art school that can fit you well?
Kirvoan Gatlin
01:55:27
Did you guys take gen ed classes while taking art classes?
Reid Raukar
01:57:03
Kirvoan - The school is fully accredited. The AA/BFA degrees do have general education. We do have many of these classes tailored towards art related topics.
Reid Raukar
01:57:16
The M/MFA degrees have far less general education type classes.
Reid Raukar
01:57:19
Ma/MFA
Heshan Herath
01:57:34
good
Emanuel Reyes
01:58:04
Okey thanks! In that case, then which class will it be good to start on a similar journey that they are right now? It doesn't need to be a pre-college one, but one that the university offers after graduating.
Reid Raukar
01:58:22
Hiwot - Choosing the right school usually has many factors. Cost, location, program that aligns with goals, etc.
Reid Raukar
01:58:51
Hi Emmanualle - Feel free to email me at rraukar@academyart.edu
Hiwot Gille
01:59:29
I was saying about the programs the goals and the instructors...
Reid Raukar
01:59:32
Wouldn't be able to offer advice with getting to see some of your current work/skill level and better understand your goals. With those details we could better recommend a class.
Emanuel Reyes
02:00:16
Okey thanks a lot, I will contact you
Hiwot Gille
02:00:47
Ok do you have advising or critics program?
Reid Raukar
02:01:17
Hi Hiwot - We have a team of admission representatives that can assist.
Hiwot Gille
02:01:54
good any requirements?
Reid Raukar
02:02:19
Hiwot - Only completion of high school
Hiwot Gille
02:02:36

Did you ever consider other things to “do” with your art… rather than pursuing Fine Art. Did you consider something like Illustration for application as a more “secure” path? If so, what ultimately led you to Fine Art?
Hiwot Gille
02:30:59
what do you do when you not feel motivated or not be able to do it but still feel guilty you are not doing art?...do you feel like this?
Abby Rizzo
02:34:45
I have the same question as Hiwot.
Reid Raukar
02:37:06
Look at how he glows talking about his students that are now professionals in the industry!
Reid Raukar
02:41:40
We have an amazing online and onsite program. If anyone has specific questions about the university or the admissions process feel free to email me directly.
Reid Raukar
02:41:58
Undergraduate AA/BFA and Graduate MA/MFA programs
Jacquelyn Roberto
02:42:15
I will be pursuing 100% on-line. I’m sort of pushing the I BELIEVE button… It looks/sounds like AAU is confident in their on-line format. ;)
Hiwot Gille
02:42:23
Does taking online art class good or the hybrids is better?
Reid Raukar
02:42:46
We have been doing online art longer than anyone. 20 years now. We are ahead of the curve.
Jacquelyn Roberto
02:43:06
(From what I’ve read and spoken with Admissions about)
Reid Raukar
02:43:42
Hiwot - I tell people if you are able to be onsite do it. But don't sacrifice your dreams to have this education because you can't be in San Francisco. Online requires strong time management, but the feedback and instruction is excellent because the faculty are excellent.
Ashley Paz
02:43:45
What would your advice be for someone taking their MA fully online with almost 7 years in a completely different field? The fear is real but since the experience is lonely how do you see other students overcome that fear?
Hiwot Gille
02:44:18
thanks!
Reid Raukar
02:44:49
Hi Ashley. I see so many students coming into the graduate program coming from unrelated backgrounds. Lawyers, doctors, great jobs, but not what they love.
Reid Raukar
02:45:15
Loving what you do is a reward in itself. Finding success doing what you love is truly the goal

Tara - BFA degree is 26 classes focused in fine arts. Drawing, painting, sculpture. MFA is 18 classes specific to fine arts. The hours are countless. mastery does not happen in a semester or even a single year. Even after school growth and exploration continue. Mastery is a life long pursuit.
Reid Raukar
02:52:44
If you can draw that is a great start
Reid Raukar
02:53:18
That's creative placement
Reid Raukar
02:57:01
Choosing the right art school is personal. It needs to build a strong foundation. Make sure the school will expose you to all areas of art. Are the faculty in the industry.
Reid Raukar
02:57:15
Ultimately the decision is personal and many factors play into it.
Jacquelyn Roberto
02:57:22
To those teaching, do any of you teach the online courses?
Reid Raukar
02:57:50
Right now everyone teaches online due to COVID. I know Sung teaches online classes. I
Reid Raukar
02:58:10
I'm not going to be asking any more questions as we are wrapping up.
Reid Raukar
02:58:26
Feel free to email any additional questions though rraukar@academyart.edu
Jacquelyn Roberto
02:58:38
As an instructor how is the teaching on-line different for the interaction with students? What challenges, if any, are there with the on-line that are different from in-person?
Abby Rizzo
02:58:49
Thanks so much to you and the panelists!!
