As a screenplay writer for motion pictures or TV how would make sure that the characters in my script and the actors or actresses chosen to play those roles meet my expectations in order for my film or TV series to succeed.
Renee Montserrat Fuentes
49:06
am i supposed to see the lines here?
Hector Verdugo
49:29
@Renee- You can watch or see the lines in the links provided. It's up to you.
Hector Verdugo
50:19
@Reef- I will let Jana or Melisa answer that for you.
Renee Montserrat Fuentes
50:19
oh thanks
Isaiah Sweatt
51:30
What funniest thing about being actor or working with acting crew
Melisa
51:32
Reef: Casting is the key. In feature films—the writer does not control casting, unless you are the writer-director. In TV, the creator of the show is involved in casting…but not the episode writers. So it depends. In general, as a writer, it is good to understand that things will change substantially once the director and actors become involved.
Isaiah Sweatt
52:26
Have any of you ever voiced acted before and if so have you ever did voice acting
Isaiah Sweatt
53:46
* I mean’t how is it different from regular acting
Jana Memel
54:23
Isaiah we have two classes in Voice overs here at the Academy.
Jana Memel
54:51
Lara do you think you are unfrozen
Jana Memel
55:30
Melissa we can try to go back to Lara but if she freezes again you are going to have to do it.

Simran Kedia
59:16
its so cool
Isaiah Sweatt
59:37
@ms. Melanies I want to be animation student as well do you think acting classes will help convey the scene better
Melisa
01:00:09
Lol. The worst thing that ever happened to him—his sister is a success!
Tra'chele Roberts
01:00:16
Have any of your actors/actresses ever been in the MCU? And to becoming an actor or actress do you have personal experience in theater during school?
Hector Verdugo
01:00:21
@Isaiah- It could definitely help depending on what you are trying to develop for your portfolio.
Isaiah Sweatt
01:00:29
Thank you
Melisa
01:00:33
Yes Isaiah! We have an Acting for Animators class!
Isaiah Sweatt
01:00:48

Have any of your actors/actresses ever been in the MCU? And to becoming an actor or actress do you have personal experience in theater during school?
Nuño Vila Paula
01:01:15
how does acting for animators work?
Tra'chele Roberts
01:01:27
I'm not sure if my question sent
Zachary Robertson
01:01:29
can the attendees ask the question to all so we can see ? plz
Tra'chele Roberts
01:01:35
So I resent it
Nuño Vila Paula
01:01:54
I want to finish studying here and go to the Academy to continue my education
Hector Verdugo
01:02:07
@Zachary- You have to adjust your "TO" to All Panelist and Attendees
Melisa
01:02:14
Tra’chelle: We will train you from the get go—you do not need previous experience for the undergraduate programs
Hector Verdugo
01:02:25
@Everyone- Please adjust to All Panelists and Attendees
Zachary Robertson
01:02:32
can the attendees ask the question to all so we can see ? plz
Melisa
01:03:51
Acting for animators teaches you physical archetypes and related vocal and physical traits (which affect the acting) and this ties to how characters are drawn—so you see the organic link between body/voice/action/attitude etc
Nuño Vila Paula
01:04:18
that's incredible
Amina Marquez
01:04:29
virtual round of applause! :) those facial expressions made it even better!
Melisa
01:04:53
Amina: I agree!
Nuño Vila Paula
01:05:00
* applauds * this was great to watch
Diane Ayerdi
01:05:11

Autumn Jackson
01:06:25
do director and writer normally get along ?
Jana Memel
01:06:34
usually
Jana Memel
01:07:06
Usually they do, but some STARS don't
Jana Memel
01:07:18
It is important that they do or the film will not work.
Khaliah Baldwin-Wishom
01:07:29
I know this was probably already mentioned but I wanted to ask, what genre is this?
Autumn Jackson
01:07:36
ok thanks
Vanessa Henry
01:07:37
Im sorry I came in late, I was in class
Jana Memel

@Vanessa- Thanks for being here!
Samantha Chase
01:08:24
She would only do it if they did it “together.”
Ty Crawford
01:08:45
I’d love to try animation. Are there classes for impressionist too?
Hector Verdugo
01:11:06
@Ty- Are you a sudent here right now?
Ty Crawford
01:11:27
yes BFA student
Melisa
01:12:42
We do not teach how to do impressoins—but we do have a Voiceover class, Ty
Ty Crawford
01:13:33
Thats for animation right?
Julie Hawkins
01:14:09
what r we doing here
Melisa
01:14:18
Ty: The Voiceover class is in ACT—for commercials, narration, and character voices
Ty Crawford
01:14:40
oh that’s awesome
Erick Justo
01:14:44
Ok, so I have a good reel as a director and some important short films festivals selections, but... how can I start my journey into Film Industry? I'm an animator and don´t have a clue on how can I make the next step. ( Like to actually get to work as a filmmaker )
Ty Crawford
01:15:02
BTW great job Lara and Caleb
Paul Silva
01:15:26
Here I come everybody fair warning!
Andy Frestner Joseph
01:16:04
I have previous experience, in fact, i had the privilege of working on two Dominican movies, so i opt for the intensive! Could you please sent to me more information about?
Hector Verdugo
01:16:13
@Erick- You can send me an email when you have time and I can also try to help setup a time to talk and get you some help. Glad to hear you have a great reel. Email: hverdugo@academyart.edu
Hector Verdugo
01:16:44
@Andy- Send me an email and I'll make sure to get you all the info you need. hverdugo@academyart.edu
Tra'chele Roberts
01:16:46
For students who want to come to this school who are out of state, would it be practically impossible to do the classes since it's a hybrid class? Or is there a way that we can still take the class despite being out of state?
Jana Memel
01:17:18
You can do hybrid this summer, we will be streaming all the classes on zoom.
Andy Frestner Joseph
01:17:41
@Hector- Thank you so much.
Autumn Jackson
01:18:06
how much time does it take actors to learn a script?
Hector Verdugo
01:18:09
@Tra'chele- It looks like Jana answered your question but send me an email and we can talk about options for you. hverdugo@academyart.edu
Diane Ayerdi
01:18:12
Are all acting classes going to take place via Zoom this coming summer?
Melisa
01:18:49
Autumn: It depends—every actor is different. Also—some scripts are harder than others, length and language-wise
Jana Memel
01:19:05
They will be hybrid if the city lets us do that.We won’t know for months.
Maiyah LaMar
01:19:12
Where will this stream be posted since it’s being recorded?
Hector Verdugo
01:19:16
@Diane- Most likely. We are eager to host coursed back onsite once the city and state allow things to open back up. We will do what is safe and best for the students.
Beth Mitro
01:20:06
I'm so confused, what's going on here?
Jana Memel
01:20:29
We are talking about how people prepare to direct and act in a scene
daisy Garcia
01:20:49
Sorry I didn’t see well, so we can only join any of the acting, voicing programs after our first year enrolled in AAU?
Khaliah Baldwin-Wishom
01:20:58
Is there any path to aim for a career where you direct an animated tv show, animate, and voice act all at once?
Jana Memel
01:21:08
No, you can join after you have graduated from high school
Jana Memel
01:21:21
There is also a program called AE for high school students
Beth Mitro
01:21:25
oh, I see, makes sense, nailing it
Maiyah LaMar
01:21:39
Is this recording being posted anywhere?
Hector Verdugo
01:22:26
@Everyone- You will all receive a copy of this recording sent to you by tomorrow!
Alexandra Nichols
01:22:27
Could someone pin both the actors, so we can see both of them, even when one of the actors may not be speaking to see their reaction to the other actor?
daisy Garcia
01:22:35
what if we have no experience in anything? Can we still join and will we have to audition to get in?
Jana Memel
01:22:57
Yes you can join, we are teaching you, lots of our students have no experience
Hector Verdugo
01:23:02
@Daisy- Yes! That's why we are here. We want to help teach students that are eager to learn
Hector Verdugo
01:23:13
hverdugo@academyart.edu
Melisa
01:23:34
Khalilah- those tend to be different and highly specialized fields (directing animated shows, acting for animated shows which is voiceover acting, and actually animating, which requires drawing skills)
Hector Verdugo
01:23:35
Send me an email when you can and we can talk more about how the program options work.
Morenike McFaal
01:23:58
Do students interested in directing do have to take acting classes as well?
Melanie Lavarini
01:24:29
Definitely interested in voice acting as an elective later on!
Jana Memel
01:24:31
In the summer intensive yes. In the acting program one class to understand how it works
Diane Ayerdi
01:24:35
Once students finish the acting program at Academy of Art University can they land a lot of professional acting roles?
Melisa
01:24:54
Morenika- yes, directors take at least one acting class plus a script analysis class together with writers and actors. You may take more if you wish
Cadence Larson
01:24:55
Can I apply for this school as a junior in high school, or do i have to wait until my senior year?
John Ambrose
01:24:56
great actions in showing how a scene progresses from one moment to the next. I am listening and learning. Thanks
Jarvis Ferguson
01:25:02
when applying, is there going to be an audition or no for acting?
Jarvis Ferguson
01:25:13
when applying, is there going to be an audition or no for acting?
Melisa
01:25:13
Thanks John—good to see you here!
Jana Memel
01:25:16
Landing professional roles depends on so many factors, no one can say.
Morenike McFaal
01:25:27
Thanks John!
Jana Memel
01:25:45
However, you will be incredibly well trained. Professionals will have seen your work, you will leave with a professional reel. So you have a leg up.
Melisa
01:25:50
Jarvis- for the undergraduate Acting programs, you do not need to audition
Jarvis Ferguson
01:26:45
ok thank you
Isaiah Sweatt
01:26:57
Could anyone do improv night at AAU
Isaiah Sweatt
01:27:05
If they offer
Hector Verdugo
01:27:07
@Jarvis- The first step is that we have a 1:1 to understand what your goals are so we can make sure this is the right program for you. The short answer is no, you do not need a reel or portfolio to be accepted. We want to help students, even if they are just getting started.
Hector Verdugo
01:27:25
@Jarvis- Send me an email so we can setup a time to talk. hverdugo@academyart.edu
Deniz Ekim Onal
01:27:46
I am considering to apply here after I graduate from my uni with a degree in translation and a film certificate but I am extremely confused as to what I should be capable of to be accepted as an international student to your acting program and maybe even be able to secure a scholarship (since I am bilingual english is no issue). Could you please infırm me a bit?
Hector Verdugo
01:27:56
@Isaiah- Yes, clubs are open to all students and majors. You're welcome to join any of the student events.
Deniz Ekim Onal
01:28:01

Diane Ayerdi
01:28:48
does academy of art University guide students as ti where to audition to land acting roles?
Hector Verdugo
01:28:52
@Deniz- Send me an email and we can go over things. I oversee all International Admissions and we have a great team of international specialist that can help you.
Jana Memel
01:28:55
yes
Hector Verdugo
01:29:03
@Deniz- hverdugo@academyart.edu
Hector Verdugo
01:29:16
@Diane- Yes
Paul Silva
01:29:34
not to forget their father in all this
Melisa
01:30:30
Great point Paul! That is an excellent use of backstory to motivate the characters
Diane Ayerdi
01:30:47
Does having a singing talent help with landing more acting roles?
daisy Garcia
01:30:57
Will the chat messages also be included in recording?
Hector Verdugo
01:31:13
@Daisy- I believe it is.
Beth Mitro
01:31:15
Better
daisy Garcia
01:31:26
ok thank you
Melisa
01:31:40

Diane Ayerdi
01:40:55
A lot more feeling, dedication and connection to the characters from both actors this time around. Great Job! You are both getting better and better with your acting skills!

Melisa
01:41:13
Yes Ron
Sigourney Tulfo-Santillan
01:41:39
this "Subtext" exercise is interesting
Samantha Chase
01:41:56
It’s quite realistic. Many students and people are helped by gov assistance for natural disasters. I.e. Katrina
Beth Mitro
01:42:13
yes on Fema that time Thx
Melanie Lavarini
01:42:13
Wow never seen this technique in action.
Anaya Ross Sanchez
01:42:23
I love to see the different approaches to this one scene amazing
Andy Frestner Joseph
01:42:32
Great Technique
Gina Ramirez
01:42:33
This is awesome!
Patricia Vega
01:42:41
It truly is!!
Melanie Lavarini
01:42:44
So cool how they have a different spin on it every time
Melisa
01:43:23
That is true Melanie- and what is interesting is that this character, Wendy, lies about it to aggrandize herself and torment her brother :) What does that reveal about her as a character?
Andy Frestner Joseph
01:44:01
An other piece of feeling
Andy Frestner Joseph
01:44:06
interesting
Nuño Vila Paula
01:44:20
if this was recorded many times, i feel sorry for the editor that has to choose which scene was better
Simone Perry
01:44:21
loved that exercise!!!
Melanie Lavarini
01:44:24
My interpretation would be is she is too full of pride and afraid of being seen as vulnerable/unreliable perhaps

Tra'chele Roberts
01:45:48
When going into your acting program, for someone with slight anxiety, how would one actually overcome that when in front of cameras and huge crowds of people? Would acting be difficult for them? I'm specifically speaking about myself because I can be a bit shy around new people but I'm just curious.
Beth Mitro
01:46:18
yeah she took the scene
Jana Memel
01:46:18
Many actors have extreme anxiety, that’s why they act, because when they are other people they aren’t anxious
Tristan Conner
01:46:22
Focus all your energy on the other in your scene. Make it about them, not you.
Morenike McFaal
01:46:46
Very nice! Interesting process...
Paul Silva
01:47:13
brother and sister!
Melisa
01:47:54
he director should circle the take/s they prefer while on set, that helps the editor. And the director will sit with the editor as well
Melanie Lavarini
01:48:15
Thanks! And if I can add a bit of advice, I became my shyness by studying theater in high school so really embody the character, to the point you adopt all the mannerisms and all. I’m no expert though just personal anecdotes
Zachary Robertson
01:48:16
it’s more power
Melanie Lavarini
01:48:28
*I overcame
Zachary Robertson
01:49:17
if you come from a musical theater back ground how hard is it to adapt to acting on the camera?
Zachary Robertson
01:49:48
right
Jana Memel
01:49:59
Zachary that is why we train so much on camera, so that you can learn to bring it down.
Zachary Robertson
01:50:13
right
Beth Mitro
01:50:26
Film, easier, pays better, residuals, camera, rolling, cuts, edits oh yes
Melisa
01:50:31
Zazhary: you can do it but to is harder since musical theater tends to be broader/bigger so musical theater actors may need to “untrain” some habits in order to do film—but it varies by the actor
Tra'chele Roberts
01:50:54
I mean I've done plays in church, if that counts, because I never done theater in high school because I wanted to do it with one of my friends but it never happened. Would that lessen my chances of becoming a good actress?
Jana Memel
01:51:18
No Tra’chele we train you to be good
Paul Silva
01:51:19
It has to be fun you can see it in the eyes feel it in your heart
Zachary Robertson
01:52:04
right
Beth Mitro

02:03:22
Actors, favorite warm up for acting?
Vanessa Henry
02:03:28
I came in late so I do have a question for the three of you doing this small pieces of screenplay:
Morenike McFaal
02:03:30
What is the greatest challenge of a director?
Jana Memel
02:03:47
Vanessa what is your ?
Vanessa Henry
02:04:00
Are you film or stage actors?
Vanessa Henry
02:04:16
Also Caleb looks familier
Jana Memel
02:04:26
They are both
Paul Silva
02:04:42
to Caleb what is the difference to you between acting live or filming ?
Rebecca Rania Hermawi
02:04:51
Actors, do you hate it when writers write too many directions in the parenthesis under the dialogues?
Rizzalynn De Leon
02:05:30
Is there a specific path to becoming a director?
Tra'chele Roberts
02:05:51
For directing, how do you come up with compelling ideas that would draw the audiences attention to keep them intrigued to what you're trying to portray and also keep them on the edge of their seat when watching what you give to them?
Reef Alkaud
02:05:54
Does a motion picture or TV show mixed with animation characters and live performers is more challenging than just a full animated film or TV series or one that is without animation?
Jemima Singer
02:05:55
in voice acting if you can’t make your voice change to a tune that sounds cartoonish. does that mean your not a right fit?
Raven Lozada
02:06:07
Hi, I'm an aspiring animator and I find that I get this sort of anxiety when attempting to direct the Voice Actors. I tend to get nervous and feel bad about giving directions or having them read the same line several times. What's a good way to be a more confident director?
Vanessa Henry
02:06:10
@Rizzalynn I would like to know that as well! I do not want to be an actor
Jarvis Ferguson
02:06:14
have any of the actor’s done short films, if so where can I watch?
Andy Frestner Joseph
02:06:24
The voice will also depend on the emotion of the moment
Andy Frestner Joseph
02:06:30
or the feeling
Melanie Lavarini
02:06:36
Thanks again for your time actors
Nathalie Helo
02:06:38
When directing, which challenges have you found yourself with when guiding actors into a specific emotional state?
Cadence Larson
02:07:59
I have to go, its getting late where i am from. But thank you guys for your wisdom, i really enjoyed watching!
Hector Verdugo
02:08:21

There is a question I have been wanting to ask some of you that are Film actors and it is about filming now during the Covid Crisis. A couple of weeks ago Tom Cruise was pissed because some didn't want to do what was needed (wear a f**king mask) to protect those on the set. So his rant about how Hollywood needed them to do their part to keep the industry moving and peoples jobs and lives were on the line - My questions also is do you think he was out of line?
Rodrigo Diaz
02:18:26
Thank you very much.

What about if you are acting and needed to dance in a scene and if you are not a good dancer? In this case, how can it be improvised or that could be done?

How does one become a good director? And if writing as a hobby would it somewhat widen your gaze as an aspiring director? If that makes sense.
