Hi from Mexico!!!

34:32
Will there be a way to get the recording for the video in case we don't get everything important written down?

34:35

I definitely would love to join the University

36:59
going great

37:06
Doing well tonight

37:09
Hello!

37:35
So is there any game design in this or is it just art?

38:04
yeah because i'm into drawing comics

38:04
What are your thoughts on procreate with the Ipad?

38:13
@Ryan- This is concept art for Games

38:29
Procreate is great to draw with on the iPad

38:33
@Kellin- We also see many students using the Ipad and procreate.

38:48
That's great to hear!

38:52
I use photoshop

38:59
I don't have an ipad

39:02
If anyone has questions about game design we can answer that

39:05
do i need one?

39:17
this is awesome that this is from DreamWorks since it has the best movies that explores a lot of things.

39:24
Once I have create a story like it's a female, slim body type etc what's next how to start?

39:34
If it comes to deciding between an iPad or a Wacom tablet which one is better??

39:41
Where do you find work as a character designer/concept artist? Besides basic job boards like LinkedIn/glassdoor/etc.

40:14
not an ipad but as long as you have some sort of graphics pen tablet or mainly some screen to draw on really for digital drawing

40:23
or drawing digitally

40:25
How much time did you spend on that initial sketch

40:42
I don't have one- where could I get one?

40:45
depends on the skill really

40:52
i don't have a pen

40:57
im just saying based on my experience

40:58
where can I get one?

41:02
online

41:21
Tomb Raider!

41:25
I think you can get it on amazon.

41:40
because that's how I get a Wacom tablet.

41:53
How does working with game programmers integrate with game design artists?

42:19
Like, would the artists’ create and thus used for programming?

42:29
Or do they work together from the start

42:41
Don't forget the switch!

42:53
oh yes

42:59
The Switch is great!

43:27
Jill Ann Cooke from YouTube asks:Do you start with the gesture or do you have a reference?

43:33
@Everyone- Switch fan here too! Loved Breathe of the Wild.

43:40
What is a pro and a con the major once that we should be aware of before getting into this industry?

43:46
Do you get any chances to reuse the assets you make for ips that get tossed?

44:18
Much love for Nintendo

44:26
agreed jasmine

44:32
it must've been challenging to adjust to make artwork into video games in new consoles since you've just got used to other consoles.

44:59
so how do you go about pushing a character without breaking anatomy

45:00
can you share some examples of mood boards?

45:08
Im a huge fan of Nintendo

45:40
Going from PS2 and Xbox to Xbox 360 was a big leap

46:12
How much time should you expect to put into developing a concept for, say, a character(days/weeks)? Or how long have you done it yourself?

46:29
Where should I start to start my own studio or to get my art out there

46:48
How long would you have on job to collect your refrences and get moodboards together?

47:13
Are there any specific programs or internships that you know of and could recommend for students to look into?

47:19
What's the first step the artists do when the project begins?

47:55
Are there any club or something like that, to help student improve on a concept art skill if they choose to go towards 3d Modeling

47:57
I grew up with older cousins that are huge fans of Nintendo but I'm always fond with PlayStation games and Xbox games since it's different vibes.

48:36
oh right how does everything work with everyone having different art styles? my art style is basically the Anime art style

48:59
What is your process for giving clothes more depth and believability like the shirt or suit collar on the hero your drawing

48:59
How narrow are the deadlines for you guys when the project has begun its production?

49:13
Does this school help build up art skills from any expertise level? Or do you have to already have a certain level of skill?

49:19
What to do when feeling stuck?

49:25
This looks so great by the way!

49:27
IHow would you set up your portfolio if you are looking to come to the school for your masters? I am finishing up my degree but I lean more as a illustrator.

49:33
What five main characters types would you recommend to include into a portfolio? (Ex. Super hero, fire fighter, child character, etc.)

49:51
BlazingTalonGames attending on YouTube asks: what is your favorite project you have worked on so far?Yago attending on YouTube asks: for online classes, what are some things I would need for the game development course?

50:02
are there more remote-work-from-home jobs nowadays?

50:09
do you have any advice about designing characters?

50:19
would you recommend an illustration major for someone who wants to do character design ?

50:28
There are many jobs out there remotely now

51:32
Are there any students from India?

51:33
about art styles

51:34
I would suggest concept art from our department for Character Design

51:39
is this on animate program or photoshop? your superhero artwork I mean?

51:59
how does that work because mine is an anime art style just wondering

52:09
how do you get into doing concept art for these gaming companies?

52:35
Is there any tips you could give for improving an art style?

52:38
@Noah- We actually teach this as a major/track here in the school of Game Development

52:53
Yeah are there specific concept artist positions? How does that differ depending on the size and type of the company/studio?

52:59
You said when you are working with an IP you don't always get to draw what you want. Does it make you feel unmotivated? and if so how do you get over it?

53:05
Should you really care about how the rough sketch looks or it can be just bunch of line going all over the place as long as it is making a figure?

53:07
@Jesus- I will ask but I can tell you the main ingredient is to draw, draw, draw

53:29
oh okay I currently attend but i'm in graphic novel illustration

54:27
That’s good advice, thank you

55:03
Yago attending on YouTube asks: in game development, do you learn everything or do you take courses for what you want to do like for animation or concept art?

55:17
How does one go about developing their own unique style/ voice in art? And does having a unique style aid your appeal to companies/ studios?

55:21
as far as departments go, what’s the difference between game development and visual development? is one preferable for artists specifically?

55:42
As a concept artist, how much of the story do you get to create as a professional? Or is the story written by Game Designers?

55:45
is like a summer program or something for knowing what the courses/classes are like at the university?

56:05
yeah

56:09
I did noticed that in the sequel of Incredibles and the original since the graphics in the original is organic while the sequel is nice with a lot of squash and stretch but felt too soft.

56:31
Is there a large focus on color pallets/ synergies for concept art with character or even background for a game? Or is that dependent on the mood?

56:38
If we can address developing your own unique style, that would be good since that was in the description of the event.

57:10
can you tell how much students improved after attending Academy of arts like before attending their skills were here and after attending they are here?

57:58
are there instances where an engine may need to be overhauled to compensate for crazy gameplay mechanics?

58:06
can we be a concept artist & illustrator or should we just focus on doing the one we prefer between the two?

58:23
game development is where game art falls onto right?

59:40
@Jessenia- Yes that is in the Game Development Program

59:47
oh and to join the school any requirements

59:51
What are the current popular styles out there?

01:00:27
should I apply now even if I am not gone be done with my AA degree until winter quarter.

01:00:34
@Jessenia- Email me and we can go over everything together. Id be happy to help you. Email: hverdugo@academyart.edu

01:00:36
If I like programing but also drawing what department I can apply to?

01:00:48
ah ok great

01:00:48
I know you suggested to draw all the time, everywhere you go, how do you not get discouraged or burnt out?

01:01:01
@Divot- Email me. Let's talk and see what makes the most sense for you. hverdugo@academyart.edu

01:01:04
I know you suggested to draw all the time, everywhere you go, how do you not get discouraged or burnt out?

01:01:14
Do concept artists work with the other departments? When developing a game in the start?

01:01:32
look at other people's art on social media that's what I do

01:01:44
or watch anime and read comics/ manga

01:02:18
I've heard of the last of us TV series I'm exited but feel a little skeptical since that game is 7 years old now.

01:02:21
What to do when you feel art blocked?

01:02:21
Wow how do you sleep

01:02:22
I hear a lot about students landing awesome jobs and companies but what happens with everyone who doesn't make it into the big companies?

01:02:24
Kudos to you.

01:02:37
What do you recommend to stay inspired to keep working? Even during the burnout and having other discouragement arise.

01:03:30
how do you handle the fear of how my art is going to look or maybe when you try to draw a character and it doesn't look the way you wanted ?

01:05:22
I would also like to know how does everything work wit people having different art styles?

01:05:29
*with

01:06:13
Same. 31 and am in my second semester of grad school for illustration

01:06:31
As a character designer or visual development artist working in an animation studio (freelance or not), what happens after designs are finalized? Do you move on to designing characters/environments for another project in that studio, or are you off the hook for awhile until they need you again for redesigns or designs for new upcoming projects?

01:06:50
Good to hear! I am 30 as well

01:07:56
How difficult is the transition from using Procreate to Photoshop for drawing?

01:07:57
it is good to know that older artists who have spent a lot of time getting ready for the industry can still have a chance... sometimes easy to feel like 'the new young artists are getting the all the jobs'

01:08:01
What are the requirements or skills that the Academy consider most important in a portfolio to start the courses and which aptitudes you believe that we will gain during the game development program ?

01:08:02
Thanks for this advice. Currently feel a little discouraged and stressed with my art practice, I love it but it can be frustrating not seeing the results I want. Balancing more with other things sounds like a good solution.

01:09:22
Never too deep. It’s too easy to feel unmotivated and let it overcome. Definitely needed to hear this!

01:09:54
ABSOLUTLY RIGHT

01:10:23
@Caitlyn- The thing to remember is that you are learning every time you fail.

01:11:08
I'm a senior at least 2nd semester and into animation and I've just turned 26 last month. so I hear topics about burns out a lot and it's usually the negative and that gets me worried because I wanted to keep going of what I'm going for but it's easily full of challenges. so hearing this from you makes me feel better and inspiring and motivated.

01:11:26
i mean as of in the studios and all

01:12:03
depending on what styles people are they grouped by the more similar styles for example mine is Anime

01:12:36
Should you have a set idol to look up to for art? My style constantly changes, and though I enjoy work from others, I've never followed anyone, though I hear it helps certain people

01:14:01
what programs do you use?

01:14:02
@Emily- I personally don't think you have to have a single idol. Sometimes taking inspiration in pieces makes an amazing style.

01:14:16
@HVerdugo - accepting failure is easy, it’s the learning part that can be tedious and frustrating. Trial and error is definitely a test of patience

01:14:26
I see, thank you

01:15:16
What pages do you recommend to see portfolio references?

01:16:13
My art style is also inspired by artists I look up to. It is good to know that other artists use the influence of other artists’ styles to create their own instead of coming up with one from scratch. I always felt pressured to find an “original” style trying not to copy other artists, but throughout the years, I learned to not think about style as much. It will come around over time with practice, persistence, study, and constant inspiration all around, whether that be from other artists or real life.

01:16:32

01:17:07

01:17:14
Emily I know what is like to failure believe me I've been there. and so taking failure as a step forward or using that to grow does help a lot. it does take time but it's definitely worth it.

01:17:20
All the way.

01:18:21
that's why I waited so long to start

01:18:27
True!

01:18:27
I can relate to that a lot as well

01:18:38
Indecision is a Decision

01:18:46
yes I feel you soooo much, thank you for sharng that to others

01:18:50
sharing

01:18:50
We all find ourselves running in place sometimes.

01:19:02
Pick a path and go forward.

01:19:07
This is also why I waited so long to go to school until now. I felt so much pressure that I could never make a career out of it and I should chose something "more practical". Im glad my husband finally convinced me otherwise. :)

01:19:10
well I've always liked drawing since I was in Kindergarten but afterwards ive always been interested in drawing humans but i didn't want it to be realistic but neither too cartoony.. after some years after a certain event and started watching anime is where I got my inspiration because its not too realistic yet not too cartoony

01:19:24
it took 5 years of military service to realize that I wanted to pursue art seriously despite the negative stereotype

01:19:31
@Maristan- Way to go! Great story!

01:19:35
How long can debt from going and taking these courses usually last? Like are all of the speakers today still in debt or?

01:20:07
@Caitlyn- That's awesome! Thanks for your service as well! =)

01:20:19
but up until recently ive thought about combining the things i liked; i still wanted to draw something but then thought about video games and it ead me here

01:20:23
*lead

01:20:25
Also, to those worrying about costs. Something my husband and I talked about. You will probably be in debt throughout your life for whatever reason. Car, House, Medical. It's OK to go into debt for a career, because at least it ages better than a car. Haha

01:20:46
Something I am trying to overcome is you have to be born with talent to be successful as an artist, definitely heard it a lot

01:21:26
Ever since I could lift up a pencil I have been drawing and it made me feel happy and release stress and show how I feel. Drawing makes me happy and I always wanted drawing and gaming design to be my career

01:21:26
how much is tuition in AAU and what are some possible scholarships or grants?

01:21:35
I truly feel like I will be happy going into this field, it’s definitely something I have been passionate about for a long time. I’m glad I have taken the first step by entering the Academy

01:21:41
@maristan that's a great point, Ive been trying so hard to avoid it at every turn and its really hard

01:21:45
Haha Brian makes it look very easy !

01:21:53
and btw brian, I love your drawing

01:22:06
drawing is basically like your own handwriting

01:22:10
ill say that

01:22:35
@Yao As AAU says: "It's 10% talent and 90% hardwork." That's what I remind myself when someone tells me that you have to have natural talent to do something. It's a SKILL, not a TALENT.

01:22:41
what if your hand shake a lot and they are not very stable?

01:23:28
@Divjot- The beauty of being alive today is technology. There are so many tools that can help with that.

01:23:55
BlazingTalonGames attending on YouTube asks: So right now im in the Game Design program and I know its a little bit off from getting my degree, but once I graduate in the future, what would be some good game companies to try to apply at?

01:24:07
creativity and imagination are also unique to each person which can also make a difference

01:24:10
@Everyone- There are so many people with natural talent NOT doing anything with it. There are SO many people that developed their talent that are successful.

01:24:15
Thanks for the reminder y’all its gonna keep me going

01:24:25
Can you talk about the difference between in person and online classes?

01:24:41
You guys are making it sound like this career consumes ones social life

01:24:41
I just love learning how games work

01:25:19
@Everyone- Coming from someone that is a mediocre artist I have made some amazing paintings by learning and practicing. It's really something you can get better at the more you practice.

01:26:51
any passion can consume your social life if others don’t share that passion.

01:27:27
@Oscar – You can definitely have a social life in nearly most fields. It all depends on whether or not you give yourself the time to do the work and the time to have that free time to be social

01:27:41
that's good to hear

01:28:01
Here!

01:28:10
lol yea

01:28:11
exercise is so important, especially if you sit to do art all day

01:28:14
How is the game industry and diversity in the recent years?

01:28:24
When looking for jobs, are there any “at home” options. Or is working in this type of field require you to move to Cali

01:28:24
I play D&D. It keeps me very creative while also having a lot of fun & a social time with friends.

01:28:26
I am trans and I want to know what I’m getting into

01:28:29
Excellent drawing

01:29:12
I am interested in both storyboarding and character design. Can I create a portfolio for both fields when applying for a job at an animation studio, or is it recommended to focus on one specific field? Considering that both character design and storyboarding are in the pre-production stage, is it possible to get a job for both if your portfolio meets each of the field’s requirements?

01:29:43
How hard is it to get into doing splash art for games? Is that just a part of the job of a concept artist or is that a specific job in itself?

01:30:28
I would be happy to sit here and watch you draw all day lol

01:30:30
@Kaitlin- Email me so we can talk. We can try to go over all of this. I think going over some things will help you here. Email: hverdugo@academyart.edu

01:30:43
Side note, love the Japanese star wars poster

01:31:01
That room is awesome

01:31:12
interesting story about my life as much as I was majoring in animation i used to wanted to go be a studio artist as a kid ever since I watch pbs commercials and also watching a tv show that's shows studio arts in general and because I grew up with that with elementary to high school I thought it's what I really want. but over time growing up I see a lot of inspiration from manga, anime, cartoons but also different types of artist that that isn't high school thing but makes me want to know more. the challenge that got me then was when the school council back then said about being an artist is realistic and told me to do other things and that is when going to a job fair and I saw an art school about animation I somehow convince them about choosing to be an animatior just because i want to go to an art school. but little did i realize i find myself liking animation more than I thought I did and all what I grew up with payed off and I find myself enjoying it.

01:31:43
What is the coding part of gaming is called

01:32:07
any suggestions of books that we should read for improvement

01:32:18
I love that Star Wars poster in the background

01:32:42
How long does it take to master blending the right colors for the background, details, and the subject to point out the art you want to execute? I've been having problem the right amount of colors to choose since the spectrum is wide

01:33:04
When will this meeting end?

01:33:20
where can we find this video after it look at it afterwards

01:33:29
it's all Witten in Japanese. :)

01:33:38
Would the concept artist be working on multiple projects?

01:33:53
What about personal projects? Like if you'd want to make your own comic, animation, or video game. how would someone start?

01:34:11
What kind of art pieces would be recommended to include in an art portfolio? Are there specific things that schools and studios consider most important?

01:35:57
how does the art is involved in games like Hellblade: sennua's sacrifice with so amazing graphics and realistic designs?

01:36:20
Triple A title video games can cost as much as some high-production movies.

01:38:06
How do you keep ideas fresh and creative without getting too frustrated? Do you have artists you like that you could recommend?

01:38:45
if working for a studio, are concept artists only utilized in the very early stages of the development or are they busy throughout the entire production process?

01:38:56
do 3d modeler get to through an idea for a character or not

01:41:29
Does the size of a game development team determine what an individual does? for example if you're a character concept artist do you also need to do the landscape?

01:41:34
I know it might seem silly but what if you want to know and learn how to do it all? Concept art, character art, 3d modeling, effects art, animation, story boarding, etc? Should I pick one or two to start with or try and multitask them all?

01:42:06
I relate to Kellin’s question! I kind of want to do it all and am debating different academy of art degrees

01:43:24
@Kellin- I personally think you're better off being a bit more narrow or focused on what you do in Game Development. You can be well verse but you might not want to stretch yourself too thin

01:43:24
how to find those artist portfolio

01:43:37
If I'm not financially ready to enroll in school, should I just focus on learning more and developing my skills until I'm able to?

01:43:38
I third that question. I would love to be in multiple parts of the creation and production process. How easy is it to expand into other fields?

01:43:38
I have to run, thanks this was awesome

01:43:47
that's makes a lot of sense

01:43:50
Gaming is definitely a growing industry. In your opinion, how is finding work after getting a degree?

01:44:11
Would you say it's a fair guideline... that your artist skill should already be roughly on par with skill of existing artists on dev teams?

01:44:30
I'm with Yao I was in that struggle between concept art, character design, storyboarding, and also an animatior in general.

01:44:36
Thanks for being here. Please send me an email if you want to talk. hverdugo@academyart.edu

01:45:09
@Maytal- We can setup a time to talk and even look at some of your artwork to help give you some advice if you want some help?

01:45:25
@HVerdugo As someone that really struggled with my first drawing class for my Game Design degree, what advice do you have? And would you suggest Procreate or Photoshop? (I'm familiar with Photoshop for media editing and Procreate a little for the drawing class.)

01:46:33
Thank you for your answering my question!! It was very helpful!

01:46:34
okay I'll send you the email if you want to talk to me.

01:47:55
@Kaitlin- It will really depend on your contract if you are on freelance. If you're signed on to a project that is completed you are done unless you are hired for another project. If you are directly employed by a company you will most likely move onto the next project.

01:47:59
It all depends.

01:48:01
let's say I have an idea for a character but I am a 3d modeler in the studio what should I do how to bring that character idea out?

01:48:41
that explains some of the burnout ive had trying to keep up with and learn a multitude of different skills all at the same time, suddenly my entire day is gone and then I feel defeated

01:48:56
Ill try sticking to just 1 skill to really learn and get good at for now

01:49:00
is there a benefit to practicing traditional mediums like oil painting, watercolor, or even clay sculpting if you’re mainly working digital in the industry?

01:49:23
Does anyone work with Adobe Dimensions in the industry?

01:49:36
so it even if you are a 3d artist you can suggestion character idea or draw and present it.

01:49:44
Perspective sucked out my soul

01:50:28
I use adobe cloud. it has all the things needed together photoshop, animate, aftereffects you name it.

01:50:41
perspective is still sucking out my soul

01:50:56
Im taking perspective this semester!

01:51:10
Is it odd that I find perspective at least with buildings really fun?

01:51:10
I taking it too lol

01:51:16
Does this school help build up art skills from any expertise level? Or do you have to already have a certain level of skill?

01:51:49
Altronza commented on YouTube: I always find it nice to see the credits of a project since it is a good reminder that not everything has to be done by one person.

01:52:02
@HVerdugo As someone that really struggled with my first drawing class for my Game Design degree, what advice do you have? And would you suggest Procreate or Photoshop? (I'm familiar with Photoshop for media editing and Procreate a little for the drawing class.)

01:52:19
the only thing that isn't included and that I've have to go account is maya. which to me maya was a challenge to me when it comes to rigging a character.

01:52:48
Here's a question see if you're coming to the school with a bachelors in graphic design, but you do have experience as a illustrator. But you're coming for your masters in illustration, would that be starting from scratch?

01:52:50
@Robert- We can teach students of all skill levels. The program is designed to help build foundation skills for those with no experience. We also can waive classes by looking at work for those that are more advanced. We have a starting point for everyone on the Undergrad and Grad level.

01:54:04
if you are working on mortal kombat type game. I am kind of hanging in between a choice go 3D modeling or concept art. Also you can call me singh.

01:54:24
@Germaine- We can setup a time to meet and talk and it will help you understand your options. We also do portfolio reviews to help put you into the best classes to help design your path in the program.

01:54:32
Email me: hverdugo@academyart.edu

01:54:39

development

01:56:37
There is a game design focus: designing levels, story, mechanics

01:58:23
Turning in. I'm glad this webinar was held, and learned a lot - thanks a bunch!

01:58:26
what is your favorite project that you have worked on and why?

01:58:40
is it better to use a game engine or create one of your own?

01:59:09
How difficult is it to connect with other students though classes online at the school?

01:59:26
I joined a little late is there a possibility that we will get a recording of this webinar afterwards?

02:00:10
Christian Robinson commented on YouTube: I transferred here with minimal drawing experience and the fundamental classes made it easy to digest and build your skills from the ground up

02:00:39
I like the creature.

02:00:44
YOU'VE DEFINITELY ANSWERED A LOT OF QUESTIONS THAT I'VE HAD. AND I WILL BE REACHING OUT VIA EMAIL.

02:00:53
Question to Brian: how do you come up with your ideas, what is your ideation process?

02:00:59
how to decide if you want to take 3d modeling path or concept art path?

02:01:01

02:16:42
This has truly been fantastic! you are all so wonderful. I did have a quick question I wanted to bring up again in case it was missed or I didn't see the answer: How hard or easy is it to connect with other students once classes have started if you are an online student?
